Re: How does the marine industry price?

Take a look at the rebuild kit price for the Jabsco and you'll feel it's price is more 'marine'. As others said Jabsco makes a lot of toilet bowls and salt water isn't going to corrode the bowl.

Re: 25lb anchor on 22' boat?

That is plenty for a 22' boat. Like the previous poster said 'Bigger is better'.

Re: Advice on mooring setup...

Why not go with a regular mooring? That is a screw or heavy mushroom. Using an anchor even a heavy one is mot the best solution for a permanent mooring.
I don't know what you gain by also tying it...

Re: Anyone ever sold at a profit?

There is one group of people that do it all the time. They are called boat brokers......

Seriously, my dad has a friend who did make money for a while flipping boats. He'd go crusing around...

Re: Turning turtle

I was in the same situation as a kid. My dad made me capsize to prove I could right the boat and the mast dig in deep. Took both of us to right it. The moral of the story was that if I capsized the...

Re: Keeping Ospreys off stern rail

Owls are good against small birds like barn swallows (if you keep moving it) but not an Osprey. If you have a bimini you might string fishing line between the rail and the bimini to keep them away.

Re: Scared of inboards and the Volvo md7a

If I had the choice I'd go with a Beta or Yanmar. Never had a volvo but I've heard the horror stories about part costs.

The real question on a diesel is hours. Seems 5000 hours is about the time...

Re: Throttle won't hold position!

Actually what you want is a cable brake like this

TELEFLEX 044386 THROTTLE CABLE BRAKE (http://www.lowcostboatingstore.com/TELEFLEX-044386-THROTTLE-CABLE-BRAKE_p_11425.html)

Note that the bolt...

Re: Inspecting fire extinguishers

My surveyor said what PaulinVictoria said. As long as they are green and under 12 years your OK. He did say you should turn them upside down and shake them a couple of times a year to keep the powder...

Re: scrapping a sailboat

I've been watching a Cal that's being broken up for parts. Don't cry too much over this one, no updates in twenty plus years and she has sunk in her slip at least a half dozen times.

One note on...

Re: Winterizing Questions?

Lots of good comments on winterizing. This is how I do it. Empty holding tank (duh). First two steps are in the haul out slip.

1. Winterize engine. On my boat the raw water intake is a 'T'...

Re: knockdown vs. capsize vs. broach

Knockdown - Storm comes up and you didn't reef, drop sails quick enough. Strong wind gust, your boat is knocked on its side i.e. 90 degrees. Usually come right back up but can lead to .....

Re: What do you stow after sailing? After the season?

Everything from the cockpit goes into a canvas bag (chartplotter, binocs, horn, gloves, chart). Jib sheets are coiled and draped over the winches, cushions go inside. Only things left out are two...

Re: Wiring a Bilge Pump

What you really want is a ratcheting crimper. Wire nuts are a no no on a boat but, any port in a storm. Soldering is not recommended for wire connections (there are numerous debates on the web about...

Re: Yanmar 1GM issues

As a previous poster said your prop is probably over pitched. That is why your seeing black smoke and the engine is lugging when you go above 2400 rpm. A properly pitched prop will have you at hull...

Re: smoke filling up the cabin

Full throttle does not necessarily mean max rpm. The OP can tell us what he meant. In the navy you have full speed and flank.... Doesn't really matter, I still stand by my original post. Which was...

Re: smoke filling up the cabin

I don't know about running at "max rpm", I don't know why people would want to. I wouldn't unless I'm in deep trouble.

Having said that I would note that a diesel engine while cruising should be...

Re: Fuel leak

What kind of engine do you have? As posted earlier a leak in the return shouldn't affect your starting.

Older Yanmars for instance, if it's cold, want the throttle advanced when starting. Remeber...

Georgia was the worst by far when we did the trip two years ago. Tides there are extreme, 5'+ and there are places where you'll need to go through on rising tide. Going outside in Florida to avoid...
