Re: Transom Lettering Height?

Pretty boat. You care enough to ask, try to do a mock up on paper. Too many boat names on pretty boats are hideously out of scale.

I draw on CAD. It's pretty easy to get a rough shape of your...

Re: Paint v. Gelcoat

As the last Alburg 35(nice boat, btw) was built in 1967, the newest ones are nearly 50 years old. Can any of them have a decent gelcoat topsides, left? If they do, they're a rare circumstance....

Re: Is "sailing performance" all in our heads?

It is, and no offense taken, I know none was intended.

I'll make up a story about 1 performance boat, and two performance sailors. :)

We like to sail in Maine. And we'll even show off a bit...

Re: Is "sailing performance" all in our heads?

I agree, mostly. I think the effect of performance is more in our heads than reality. Extremes aside(die hard racers, cruising rock stars), most of us are sailing a variety of boats on our home coast...

Re: Convert "wifi only" iPad to backup chartplotter?

I used an Ipad 2 wifi only, last season as a backup CP. I love it! I used the Garmin Glo external antenna. That stayed in the chart drawer below the glass decks and gave a perfect signal anywhere...

Re: Resealing veneer seam?

Oh no, my friend.:) This is the BEST part, if you enjoy brightwork.

You're right though on coats, 8 minimum. I'm now 12 years(egads, I'm wearing a watch!), on this cabin back varnish with a...

Re: Resealing veneer seam?

It looks like a typical wooden cabin construction. Sometimes full width planks were found(old growth forest days), but as often, the back were built up of two or several planks. They were usually...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

Yeah, she's slow. Practical Sailor gives the Union 36 high marks as a blue water cruiser. In 36' it looks like a good choice for what they had in mind. Good accommodations too for a family of four,...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

It's fun to see everybody getting their wood out. :)

This is our whisker pole(when it's not a spinnaker pole, awning support, etc). Roll down the 135% until it snaps tight to the pole end. I've...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

I'm with you there. I follow a few good ones, but I haven't heard anyone say the Kaufman's is one of those. It's getting read, but for other reasons.

The internet has channeled near infinite...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

Nice boat and gear. What kind of whisker pole did you have when you were the Kaufman's age? You had a boat, right? :)

When I was their age, I used an old light cobbled together whisker pole for...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

Ok, you made me read the whole thing. These are the parts that made me think you were piling on her.

But now you have stated they're both un prepared for ocean crossing. OK, that's a reasonable...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

I only had time to skim your looooong post Jon(what's that stick on the dock?) :)

But I get the gist. Let's test sailing moms abilities on the boat? Good idea!

Oh, and then Dad too, "Here...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

Good summation. I never got into the blogs and haven't listened to the vid but I've read a few similar reports from the latest news.

As a sailor I have enough background on the sailing experience...

Re: How much paint will I need to do the bottom of a 30 footer

I used itwhen the boat was in fresh water and it worked well keeping the bottom clean for the short season. We did some racing then, too, and kept a smooth bottom.

I wouldn't consider VC-17 in...

Re: Rebel Heart- Keeping positive

I love all these photos of kids on boats.

Everyone will have a different experience, but for us, when they were the youngest aboard, they would have been well suited for long distance on a...

Re: Rebel Heart- Keeping positive

I can't see what's wrong with that photo. Maybe they aren't used to kids like ours, that spend a lot of time, on the water?

Re: How much paint will I need to do the bottom of a 30 footer

I used VC17 for years on a similar sized boat. 2 quarts would be max. It's very thin and unless your bottom is extremely rough, 2 quarts is plenty.

Re: Rebel Heart- Keeping positive

We had an imaginary button on our last boats bulkhead. "If you want to get off the boat and go home, PUSH" The gelcoat was worn off around it. Then something would change, and nobody would want to...

Re: Rebel Heart- Keeping positive

Great idea to put this together. It's a nice video of something that's been going on for a long, long time. Non-sailors don't know this experience exists. Learning a sailing life and taking your...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

Problems like these are rare but they seem quite common now with todays media.

We've taken our(then) babies far enough 'away' on our sailboat that an emergency could have caused some serious...

Re: What did you learn to sail on?

I'm probably not alone. I learned on a home built plywood Sailfish when I was 6 or 7 years old. For the most part, from that moment on, sailing is like riding a bicycle.

You can get as good as...

Re: Rallies Gone Wrong

"Sailors are ultimately responsible for their own boats, their own decisions and the safety of their crews. Sailing alone or in a herd doesn’t change that bottom line"

That's a good one. It's...
