Re: Dangers of LED navigation lights

Look in the Annexes of the COLREGS. They define both the spectral and angular characteristics.

Re: Small Boat for Solo Sailing

I agree with MarkSF on all points.

I'm sailing a 26 foot Pearson Ariel that's well behaved in the even sometimes-challenging conditions in the SF Bay and in the swells of Half Moon Bay, and yet,...

Re: rammed:by the customs & border patrol

You might try installing an AIS transponder. If you were a smuggler, it isn't likely that you'd be sailing around broadcasting your identity and position on AIS.

Re: rammed:by the customs & border patrol

Have you read the posts in this thread? The SAME people who wrote the 4th amendment also granted government officers the power to board vessels without any kind of suspicion - let alone a warrant.

Re: rammed:by the customs & border patrol

I realize you are just saying: "show me your facts and numbers" but, you are demanding that posters here become accountants and statisticians. If you really want exact numbers, I suggest you file a...

Well, you could write your congressman ;-)

Re: rammed:by the customs & border patrol

My point is: warrantless searches of boats have been going on since long before you were ever born. There's nothing new about it. It's an ancient practice. Probably the first day someone hollowed out...

Re: rammed:by the customs & border patrol

I don't see any mention in the 4th amendment about boats. Boats have been a major vehicle of smuggling for centuries, and that hasn't changed. The 4th amendment only protects us from unreasonable...

Re: rammed:by the customs & border patrol

As long as they're polite and don't damage anything, I don't mind being boarded. I've heard and seen the Coast Guard save a lot of boaters from certain death in the cold brine - that I feel it's a...

Re: rammed:by the customs & border patrol

I agree. I asked a Coast Guard friend of mine, who's done hundreds of boardings, and his reply was : if the Coasties want you to change anything about your speed and course, they will say so -- don't...

Re: Caution: AIS Apps

There is one volunteer receiving station at Palmer Station, Antarctica (country code AQ). At the time of this writing, it has been feeding data only about 20% of the time. Not bad for Internet...

Re: Caution: AIS Apps

Thank you, TakeFive. You are absolutely right. AIS received from marinetraffic.com is only intended for people who live on a coast to identify the boats that pass by their windows.

As a licensed...

Caution: AIS Apps

I recently had a fellow sailor - who is just IN LOVE with his iPhone - show me an app that displays vessel positions received via AIS. He said: "Why should I buy an expensive receiver and...

Sailboat maximum airspeed

Colleagues:

After completing a particularly challenging voyage on the S.F. Bay last Sunday, it occurred to me that there must be a reason why my boat progressively slowed down while I was on a...

Actually, now that I think about it....

You won't see a masthead light from EITHER a motor vessel OR a sailboat when viewed from 6 points either side of directly astern (135 degrees total arc). The masthead light should project over 20...

You are absolutely correct: the absence of a masthead light should be interpreted as a sailboat. However, the absence of evidence is never as good as the presence of evidence. Here in the San...

Red over Green: Sailing Machine

The red-over-green configuration has several obvious advantages: it says unambiguously that: "this is a sailboat." While other sailors and recreational motorboat operators may not be familiar with...

Did you recently install any LED lights? I bought an LED steaming light to replace the incandescent that was there on my mast, and it wiped out my AM/FM, my SSB, and my VHF radios.

Sailing harnesses

Am I missing something, or are the sailing harnesses intended to keep you on board your boat idiotic?

All the harnesses I've seen are missing either leg straps or shoulder straps. I wonder how...
