Is it too early to commission my engine for the season?

My boat goes into the water on April 27 and I was going to go down and de-winterize the engine today, is too early, are there any negatives to it sitting around or no?

Re: Icebox with no drain hole in the bottom??

My icebox also has no drain. I put my ice in one of those small plastic "trash cans", but any little bucket would do . I find it doesn't take up much room, and it makes dumping the ice out much...

Re: I am 26, and seriously considering moving aboard with my girlfriend. Any advice?

Man, sailnet is great! Thanks for all the responses.

So, I've been researching for the past 2 days and have updated my plan. I'm going to spend less, and buy older. As of now I'm looking at two...

Re: I am 26, and seriously considering moving aboard with my girlfriend. Any advice?

Sorry, let me add a little more. Eventually, yes we would like a house, but we'd like to take 6 or 7 years and liveaboard and cruise the lakes. I am fairly handy and would do many repairs on my own....

Re: I am 26, and seriously considering moving aboard with my girlfriend. Any advice?

At our club right now there are several liveaboards year round. They use water bubblers and shrink wrap their decks. I believe most of them use electric heaters powered by the shore. I will...

I am 26, and seriously considering moving aboard with my girlfriend. Any advice?

We cannot afford a house right now, but would like to spend around 100,000 on a comfortable sailboat to live on Lake Ontario. Am currently looking at Beneteau's between 36' and 40'. Does not need to...

Re: Sewing in new battens: Asking for some advice!

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll take another look at the existing battens and pockets and see if it is worth the effort. As of now, all the sail has is two half battens, one near the top and one...

Sewing in new battens: Asking for some advice!

I have a Bayfield 29' and the mainsail has seen some hard times. As of now it is missing it's 2nd and 3rd battens, and the batten pockets have ripped and been torn to shreds. I'm still fairly new to...

Yep, Eyc! I docked at Highland twice this year. What a great little club. Everyone was so nice and friendly.

The end of my first season.

As haul out approaches I was getting sentimental and decided to put together a video of clips from my first season of sailing. If you sail on Lake Ontario you should recognize the sights! I sail a...

Re: seacocks for cockpit drains?

My bayfield 29' has seacocks on the cockpit drains. Like someone said before, I think they are required in Canada.

Re: Sailing alone??

I singlehand my Bayfield 29' fairly often, although docking in my slip is a pain. My gf is still getting into sailing, and it's true, yelling at your sig. other during docking can really cause an...

Re: Sailed singlehanded for the first time yesterday.

Thanks a lot guys. All of these tips are invaluable. I do always come bow in, my boat steers like a drunken brick when moving astern. The finger dock is on my starboard side, so when I put the boat...

Re: Single-handed Conversion

What kind of boat is it? For one, I'd try to have the headsail on a furler, and have all lines (sheets, halyards, furling line, etc..) leading back to the cockpit, with a good number of winches...

Re: Sailed singlehanded for the first time yesterday.

Ya, it is a cutter. I have only sailed it in sloop config so far though. My dad had just rigged up a 130% genny on a furler, and it wouldn't slip through the gap of the inner forestay when tacking,...

Sailed singlehanded for the first time yesterday.

I'm 26 and inherited my boat from my dad when he passed this spring. It's a 29' Bayfield. Been learning to sail this whole summer on Lake Ontario. Took a basic crusing course. I was going to go out...
