Re: Polishing is not for an old man!

I rented a scissor lift to do my 47' boat. Compounded, polished and then Fleet waxed. I'm 57. Made a huge difference. Started with just ladders but quickly realized there had to be a better way. ...

Re: Deck stains

What's the PSI rating on your electric? I have a gas model with different tips to give you different PSI sprays. I want to use it on the deck of my boat but not sure how strong a spray I should use.

Re: How much paint will I need to do the bottom of a 30 footer

I use VC-17 and sail on Lake Michigan. I use 7-8 quarts for two coats on my 47 footer. The bottom gets power washed at haul out in the fall and then just a light scrub with water to get any...

Re: Greetings from the UP

Most likely the LP not IP. LP would be the lower peninsula of Michigan for those not versed in Michigan speak. Where in the Upper Peninsula are you?

Re: Fire ! / Heat Damage

That really blows. I went through a similar experience although mine was in an indoor storage facility so there was a lot of smoke damage. I was several boats away from the one that caught fire so...

Smile Re: 50A "Y" adapter. 125/250V or just 125V?

One of the other questions I had around these adapters was how they were wired, especially the 125/250V version since it is a four wire adapter. In doing a little bit of research I learned a few...

50A "Y" adapter. 125/250V or just 125V?

I'm looking at getting a 50A to twin 30A "Y" adapter but not sure which to get. The 50A end is either a 125V or 125/250V plug. My boat has twin 30A 125V plugs. I don't have access to the pedestal...

Re: Vhf/ham

Self study is all that's required. I bought the ARRL books as they had the practice exams on CD's that run on your PC. There are probably some free ones out there but I didn't do a lot of searching.

Re: Vhf/ham

I'm also an electrical engineer and taking the exams for the ham licenses is not that difficult with your background. It will still take some studying to pass the General and Extra class exams...

Re: Pic of 1 year old aluminum anode

Is it rough from deposits on the surface of the prop or is it rough from the prop being pitted from corrosion?

Even in the fresh water of the Great Lakes you're going to end up with crud on it at...

Re: What did you learn to sail on?

First time sailing was on a sunfish back in the early 70's. Had no idea what I was doing. First boat I owned was a Luger Leward that I built as a kit. The garage smelled like fiberglass resin for...

Re: Pic of 1 year old aluminum anode

I sail on Lake Michigan and use magnesium on my MaxProp. I could probably get two years out of it if I push it but I put a new one on each year. If they don't make a magnesium for your prop you're...

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

LOL, then you should definitely move South. No doubt this winter has all of us Northerners questioning our logic. If you don't do anything outdoors in the winter then it's just a season to be...

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

I'm in semi-retirement now and I'm staying put. Summer is too nice here to leave for somewhere else. I think I just need about a month somewhere warm during the winter. February somewhere South...

Re: Where should we retire with our boat?

Greg,

I'm North of you a bit in Grand Traverse Bay. I have to admit this winter has me thinking in a similar way. It's cold (-15F tonight) and this winter has been hard. I think once summer...

Re: cost to have vc17 applied

Are you re-coating VC-17 or does the boat have something else on there now? VC-17 over previous VC-17 is a pretty easy process. No sanding required and only two coats are needed for fresh water. I...

Re: Overwhelmed sailing novice seeks advice

I'm also 56. If you enjoy it then like the others have said, just do it. Whether it's classes, crewing for someone else, or getting your own boat just get out there and go sailing. At 56 we ain't...

Re: Removing painted letters

Try a heavy cut rubbing compound on a buffer first. If that doesn't get it off then go the wet sanding route. Compounding by hand will probably not do it.

Re: Surveyors in west Michigan

I used Bob Ptak at Lakeshore Professional Marine Surveys last October. He did a great job. He's out of Jenison and his number is 616-340-1931.
