Re: Are sailors an easy target?

A houseboat recently sank in my marina. The uninsured owner disappeared leaving the marina to contain and clean up the oil and gas that floated out, salvage the boat, and haul it away. This kind of...

Re: would you buy used AGMs?

When I had my gel batteries I had no shore power and they routinely supplied occasional lights and radio power from December to March and then started the engine no problem

Re: DC Voltage -- Negative Bus to Ground

This sounds bad on a few levels.
If you have a floating ground DC system, there should be exactly 0 volts between the DC system at ANY point and the steel hull.

Re: would you buy used AGMs?

I would not buy used batteries of any kind unless they were very close to free or I knew exactly what had been done to them. Right now AGM batteries are my least favorite types anyway. IMHO they...

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

No reason in general not to have kids of all ages sailing. In THIS case they seemed a bit overwhelmed.

Re: 1 Dead, 1 injured in Beer Can Race on SF Bay

"Beer Can" race is slang for lower level racing, less serious racing, or however you want to define more casual and less rock-starish. I think the term originated in racing for a 6-pack instead of a...

Re: Safety while sailing the world - avoiding becoming a victim of crime

i work with people that live in Federal Hill. We run down there for lunch sometimes. They seem to like it and not think of it as dangerous.

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

The cost is justified by the fact we are a 1st world country with a 1st class military-SAR capability and we have decided to protect our citizens even if it is a little bit out of the way. The...

Re: Safety while sailing the world - avoiding becoming a victim of crime

That is sad news.
I have gone to Little Italy with no undue concerns for decades now. We used to like to tie up in Canton and walk around to Fells Point and back. As of a couple years ago it all...

Re: Right Sailboat for Severn River??

When I lived on Clement's Creek I would sail home with a south wind. With a north wind I dropped sails and motored in from around the Spider. After a long day coming from wherever I was never in the...

Re: Cape May Canal;Kent Narrows

I'll survey Kent Narrows in a week or two for you all.
Last year was strictly high-tide only for most sailboats.

What experience do you have and what do you expect to be able to do with the boat?
Do you have any experience with maintaining...

Re: Safety while sailing the world - avoiding becoming a victim of crime

From Federal Hill > Inner Harbor > Fells Point > Camden is a HUGE area. No one that SAILED to Baltimore needs to worry about running out of places to go. I can't think I have EVER heard of...

Re: Safety while sailing the world - avoiding becoming a victim of crime

Local knowledge - stay *out* of the hood.

BTW - did some late night...

Re: Safety while sailing the world - avoiding becoming a victim of crime

Areas I can speak to:
Baltimore - stay out of the hood and don't buy or sell drugs. The tourist areas you would go to from a boat are safe.
Bahamas - avoid Nassau and that is about 95% of the...
