Re: sail quote

I don't know, maybe the tendency to heel more.

Also maybe the raked rudder does not increase the weather helm itself but makes the helm harder for the same amount of weather helm.

But I'm...

Re: sail quote

I see,

Maybe I have some form of PTSD from last season when I would let go the sheet and still have my boat heeling while my sail was luffing and making a lot of noise and two hands firmly holding...

Re: sail quote

Thanks for all the input.

I decided to go with Doyle for peace of mind. And their loft is in my marina so it's uber local if one can say so.

They are finishing my sail but which I spec'd with...

Re: Embedded Chain plate maint/replacement

I'm sure everyone will say it's a horrible idea but how about leaving the old chain plate in and bolt a new set through the old ones after cutting the stem that goes through the deck?

That way...

Re: Use for 12V Batteries?

7amp.h is the capacity not the maximum current it can supply. And you can always parallel them to get more juice. I thought telescopes were usually balanced and so didn't require too much power to...

Re: Low buck projects- Let's see 'em!

New cover for the hatch made with sunbrella. I used somewhere between one and two yards.

It was about 20 bucks per yard + 2 bucks for the tread (both from sailrite) and 4 snap buttons (~10$). With...

Re: Tartan 30 or Ranger 29 for cruising?

I was looking for a ranger 29 at one point. A very sweet boat.

But the keel CAN have a wobble as the survey I ordered for the boat pointed out.

There was no apparent stress crack or anything...

Re: junk rig

If the battens were replaced with wishbone structures going around the mast with sailcloth on each side wouldn't that amount to a rigid wing if tensionned properly?

On another note there is an...

Re: Plugged cockpit drain

I have a drain that gets periodically clogged. I need to see if something is not growing in there.

In the meantime I plug my shop-vac to the hole. A small burst is enough to unclog it. Watch out...

Re: Upgrading

!!!! Wow thanks I totally forgot about that one!

I remember reading about them, I think it was in Latitude38.

If it's still there when I get my new sail for the "other boat" I think I'll make...

Re: rudder rake

Haha. No way...

If I ever run out of projects maybe i'll work on a transom mounted spade rudder with a fitting to reduce the rake (essentially a windvane mount). Then I'll let you know the results.

Re: rudder rake

Interesting.

So what I am gathering from all this is that the reason could be part tradition from when boats used transom hung rudders and part to reduce the keel length (since the rudder is...

Hello,

I have been looking for a thread or other info on rudder rake in boat design but I cannot find much about it.

I am curious about the effect of rudder rake and why/how designers scale...

Re: Is a Vang Really Useful on a mid to Large Boat?

Funny I never sailed my laser to race but my understanding was always that the Vang function was to flatten the sail to depower it in high winds, not the contrary

Re: Pearson Vanguard 33 reviews?

Nice discussion

So, my candid question is: is it possible to correct these defects somewhat by adding partial bulkheads and knees?

Re: sewing sunbrella

Thanks for the tip Greg, impressive work!

Sometimes old machines can be pretty rugged. Do you know how strong yours is?

Also do you use a special kind of thread for the outside jobs?

Thanks,

My sunbrella sail cover has a few tears and I thought about purchasing a sewing machine to patch it up as well as doing other small projects for the boat.

Would a 200$ sewing machine...

I got a quote for a main from FX. I also got one from Doyle whose offices are right in my marina.

Re: Position for anchor deck pipe

Thanks for the feedback.

I don't have a windlass and the "locker" is just the forward end of the boat (it does not open).

I pretty much never anchor but I still want a functional system.

I...

Position for anchor deck pipe

Hello,

I recently purchased an oval deck pipe to replace the large heavy cowling vent that used to be on my deck.

One question. What orientation to give it?

I see a lot of boat with them...

Re: Cored deck soft spot repair

I have just started addressing the soft spot in the back of my cockpit today. Probably water ingress from the rudder post.

I was going to do it from the top but decided to go from the bottom after...
