Best RPM for Yanmar 3HMF?

The 27hp Yanmar 3HMF in my 38' 15000lb boat will peg the tachometer at 4000 RPM and just barely reach hull speed (or maybe not quite). Right now I cruise at about 6.5kts @3500 RPM. I'd like to get...

Re: Crew wanted for sailing/racing in Long Island Sound

Thanks for the responses so far, please keep them coming as there is no such thing as too long a crew list.

I just sent out PMs to those who responded above, please check your inboxes.

Crew wanted for sailing/racing in Long Island Sound

I skipper a Baltic 38DP out of Oyster Bay, NY and I am seeking additional crew for the 2014 racing season. We will be racing Wednesday evenings around the cans in Oyster Bay and competing in weekend...

Re: Replacing keel bolt backing plates on Pearson 34

Do they really need to come out? Could you install new plates over the top of the old?

Re: B&G T7 for Newport 30

VMG is velocity made good to windward (directly into the wind), while VMC is velocity made good to the next mark or waypoint.

So, VMG = VMC only when your next waypoint is directly to windward.

Re: Shackle question

I have a shackle from a vang that looks just like that one and it happened the same way. The pin wasn't wired and worked loose, allowing the horseshoe to bend. Mine wasn't an HR shackle and it...

Re: Pearson 30 Stuffing Box

First time I've ever heard the P30 called hard to work on. Cut the boat? Seriously? Fire your "mechanic." Cleaning, re-packing, or replacing the stuffing box on a P30 is not difficult and is a...

Re: Converting a Catboat to a sloop

You probably want to edit that first sentence (should vs. shouldn't).

Re: Spoiler alert: "All is Lost"

Same reasons as no dodger, Hollywood. The container had to hole the boat where it did to ruin his radio and other electronics, else the story gets too complicated.

It's a drogue when deployed...

Re: Carburetor Adjustment

Find the idle mixture screw on the carburetor, turn it in for richer, turn in out for leaner. The screw controls the amount of air, not the fuel.

Re: P30 Rudder repair.

I don't think P30 rudders have any core, at least the one I tried to cut open appeared to be solid. I drilled holes and cut it with a circular saw and never hit anything but fiberglass.

Try Foss...

Re: How much deck over the cabin do I remove?

Umm, ouch. That looks bad, really bad. The rot at the keel/hull joint may be terminal if the rot at the deck/cabin trunk line isn't. I've cleaned up really really dirty smelly boats before, but I...

Re: Bonus! found autopilot - need help

In addition to the ram, you'll need a brain box, a fluxgate compass, and a control head.

Re: Replacing Inboard with Outboard

Why not fix your A4? The A4 is simple enough that anyone can do a complete rebuild if needed (and it likely isn't).

I've had outboards on sailboats and I hate them. They don't perform as well...

Re: Should I clean my sails?

Clean them if you like, but rinsing the salt off of them is more important than cleaning.

Sails don't mind cold, but keep them dry. Mold and mildew are the real enemies.

Re: Sailboat Deliivery BFS

Glad to hear that your trip went well, it sure was blowing on Saturday. Interestingly, I bought that boat too, but then "un-bought" her when I learned she had a different keel than what I was first...

Re: Stained interior teak

Sold it last week. The P30 is a great boat, my family liked sailing so much that they insisted I get something larger that we can spend weeks at a time on.

This isn't my boat, just one I'm considering, so I haven't tried removing this stain yet. The chain plate above leaked at one time, and dripped down the back of the wood in the photo. It is a...

Stained interior teak

I'm wondering how difficult it will be to get rid of this water stain.
Can it be repaired or am I stuck with it? How would you proceed?

I put one of these: Moyer Marine Online Store ( on my A4 and it works well with my hand pump. I get about 3qts out.

Re: Fuel Tank

(I'm assuming that your P30 has the original A4 and tank.)
P30s came with monel fuel tanks that will outlive us all. Don't replace it. You can't remove it without pulling the A4. That's a fairly...

Re: Need some shade, Considering a Bimini,

I also desire shade on my P30, however, I've never seen a bimini setup on a P30 that I liked. The long low boom and aft traveler make a mess of things. Instead, I decided to make a boom tent for...
