Re: How does the marine industry price?

OK, lets call those apples.

And those would be oranges. To put the metaphor in cotext, they would be oranges that were picked too early, then sat unrefrigerated for several weeks before being...

Re: wall sized TV, on a sailboat

OK, can somebody please tell me why these pics don't show? I put them in an SN album, and inserted links in the post.

Re: wall sized TV, on a sailboat

Wow, ten pages on a thread with "let's see 'em" in the opening post, and only ONE pic? I have a 40" LED screen, a smart Blu-ray, not to mention Blu-ray drive and HDMI output on my laptop. My boat...

Re: Cruising California. Experiences and advice.

Westsail (Mark?) That is one beautiful boat!
North, seems you really have two goals 1. Find and buy your boat and 2. Find a place to hole up and work on it fur just a little while.

I would...

Re: Cruising California. Experiences and advice.

Between Ventura, CIH, LA Harbor and Long Beach there's probably several hundred sailboats for sale at any given time. As to working on your new boat, Ventura has at least one DIY boat yard, as does...

Re: How many volts at the glow plugs

Preserved, you have a multimeter, run it down. To avoid possible confusion, both "relay" and "solenoid" have been used here, but it's usually only one component, and a solenoid is, in fact a relay. ...

Re: Creating a Deck mount for a deck wash system. Help!

I think you're talking about a through-deck fitting. It's one of the items listed in the article linked above, and it's in the picture, but might not be easy to source. Defender and WM have all...

Re: ipads or tablets with built in GPS

I have a Samsung Note 10 tablet (Android). It's the Wi-Fi only version, so no 3G or 4G, but still has the GPS chip. I also run the Raymarine app to link it to my e7 MFD. Not only very convenient,...

Re: Newbie to Depth/Fish Finder and GPS...Please Advise

Zac, check your transducer. On small to medium sailboats, it's quite common to see a "shoot-thru" installation, where the transducer is in a "well" filled with anifreeze as opposed to a thru-hull...

Re: Inspecting fire extinguishers

The 30 day check is basically to make sure that somebody hasn't taken it, and the gauge is in the green. Check can be done by anybody, most larger office buildings have security or even janitorial...

Re: Marine head won't pump

For replacing the hose, I would suggest removing the elbow from the pump first, heating the hose, then working the elbow barb out of the hose. Trying to horse it off in place may lead to a broken...

Re: Inspecting fire extinguishers

I've never seen that tested, the high compression ignition of fuel in a diesel is a very different kind of combustion. Somebody should try it!

I have a real Halon extinguisher aboard, and it was...

Re: Inspecting fire extinguishers

That is true, and it's just one of the reasons that ANY extinguisher that has been used (even for a micro-burst) MUST be refilled. There's a reason that the valve has a tiny zip tie on the pull pin....

Re: Rigid Bilge Blower Tubing???

The actual term is "ignition protected," not explosion proof. An explosion proof fan would also be considered ignition protected, but not the other way round, and explosion proof motors are MUCH...

Re: Hot water stink

Removing said bacteria before it gets into your boat's system is your best bet. The better water machines use both UV light and a reverse osmosis filtration systems, and the water from them is about...

Re: Rigid Bilge Blower Tubing???

It will also overheat, as most have the motor in the airflow to cool the motor.

+1 on the noise issue. The squirrel cage itself can get incredibly loaded up. Remove the cage from the motor shaft...

Re: Zen and the art of 'bottom feeding'... please contribute!

I have an Atomic 4 in my boat, and a little searching found a rebuild kit for the Zenith carb on a tractor site - at a third the cost from other sources. :)

Re: VSC saved me from CG boarding

I'd bet a paycheck that none of those collisions were caused by missing or defective safety equipment, nor would they have been prevented by a VSC or recent CG boarding.

Re: Williwa Southbound: Inside Passage Alaska to Puget Sound

Chuck, happy to see your post! That's too bad about that ironically named marina. Enjoy the rendezvous, happy things worked out for you to finally be able to attend. :)

Re: Replacing faucets - how to connect water hose?

The short answer is that you can get female pipe threades to hose barb adapters at HD, Lowes, etc. The faucet stem threads will be 1/2", and of course the barb size should match the ID of your...

Re: Another fatal attempt at "Youngest to circumnavigate"

I seem to remember an airliner crash some years ago (think it was an Airbus?) that was (eventually) directly attributed to a trim control failure.

Re: how to test plumbing?

Head is illegal? Do you mean that it's plumbed for OB discharge only, with no holding tank? Is there room for a tank? Or do you prefer to just go with a porta potty?
As far as testing goes, don't...

Re: Request for Comments: DIY Tether

Beyond the non-SS hardware and the inability to disconnect under load, this type of tether is also a problem due to its length. The shock absorption is accomplished by the web being gathered and...

Re: Cracked Catalina Transom

+1 on talking to Catalina. You may also want to run this issue in the Catalinaowners forum... With almost 7,000 C27s running around, this has probably happened before. There may have been a...
