Re: Arthur

I prefer to cross from Nantucket Sound, heading out thru Pollock Rip or Great Round Shoal Channel...

Thanks, I came thru OK, but it was a long night, and a bit more 'interesting' than I was...

Re: Malo 45' loses rudder, pulls an All is Lost

The owner of a Malo 41 has chimed in over on CSBB...

Interesting...

Hadn't heard about it, quite a story, I can add to speculation...

Re: high wind gybing technique??

It can sometimes get a bit more complicated in large seas, and sheeting in tight isn't always the best option. When the seas are running large enough, you'll likely want to jibe down in the troughs,...

Re: Orange oil and bees wax for teak

"Oiling", "Sealing" or applying any teak "Treatment" to teak decks is one of the dumbest things a boatowner can do... :-)

Don't take my word for it, take Rebecca Wittman's ...

Re: Jacklines - where to run them?

Yeah, but that's because Evans is an experienced voyager more inclined to focus on Prevention, rather than a Cure that can be purchased at West Marine... :-)

It's been a week since I linked to...

Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

I'd leave the jerry cans behind, if I were you...

Very little good comes of carrying diesel fuel on deck, especially on a trip where it's not necessary to do so...

Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

Hmmm, I'm not sure the Labrador Current has much effect on that route :-) I've never noticed it, at any rate...

Tidal currents at the Chesapeake and Delaware Entrances, and across the New York...

Re: Mooring Line

I'd second someone's earlier recommendation of the Yale Polydyne pennant. I use one in 1/2" as my anchor snubber, and a pair of 5/8" as my bridle for a drogue. West Marine does sell a comparable...

Re: Help me plan my cruise North!

Gotta agree with Dave on this one... Given your time frame, I'd suggest setting your sights on Block I and Newport as being about as far as you're gonna get, comfortably... And even then, you'll be...

I'm sure you do, Gary, as does most everyone who has them... There's no 'winning' any argument against them, of course, they're just not for me. I'm hopelessly Old School, I simply prefer to be able...

Re: Boat Consultant vs Broker

That's my first thought, as well... I've got nothing but huge respect for John Neal, but unless he and Amanda (or Barbara Marrett earlier) have done a lot more delivery work than I'm aware of, most...

Re: Thanks for this new forum: Vessels Lost, Missing or in Danger

No worries, Donna, I'll get used to it :-) I'm hoping to actually go off for a spell of sailing before too much longer, anyway... Perhaps even beyond the reach of the Web, from time to time :-)

Yup, that can work very nicely, as well, and if your vane or autopilot is not up to keeping the boat going straight, might often be the preferred solution...

Re: What do cruisers do?

Sorry, it was not intended to be condescending at all. I was just trying to 'clarify' the meaning of the term as commonly understood in the parlance of the yachting industry... The term connotes...

Re: Resuming Search!!!!!

You realize it was a 'political' decision to do so, right?

Evans Starzinger puts this in it's proper perspective... Well worth reading:

Re: Ocean baby rescue underway off Mexico

Well, that's a nice romantic, idealized vision of the past, but you might want to read up a bit on the history of professional journalism in America. A century or more ago, newspapers generally...

Re: pics of sail covers made for lazy jack systems?

No real downsides that I can see. The only thing you have to make sure of, is that the blocks on underside of the spreaders will be mounted securely. My spreaders are aluminum, so drilling and...

The failure was to the "aft bulkhead", the boat was the Oceanis 50 "Owner's Version"...

That MIGHT have been related to earlier damage done under a previous...
