Indeterminacy is often a bad connection. Rust in a wire connector is likely.

That should work fine. Sounds like you know which wire to use. Usually the sleeves are copper though aren't they?

Do you think it is asking you to input a code? If it's not taking 0000 then try 1234 (or choose a code). Obviously I wouldn't try lots of random things, but trying 0000 once and trying another code...

I agree an impact wrench is in order. As much heat as you can apply as well. Also you could try Coca-Cola on the rusty bits.
