Re: Advice For Good Boat To Learn On

Of the boats you've mentioned, I've only sailed the Ensign. My brother owns one. They're beautiful boats with a loyal following but they are a pain to rig without the proper facilities or some home...

I think a lot of pirates where just unemployed privateers

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

I think what you're losing sight of is the fact that the meanings of symbols evolve. The original intent of the pirate flag (as I understand it) was to signal attack and to scare the crap out of the...

Re: Is Sailing Sexist?

Personally I think sexism exists throughout society and in sailing. However, where it all gets a little confusing for me is whether or not you can assume that the fact that only 10% of the people in...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

I don't think anyone flying a pirate flag in this day and age condones raping, stealing, or murder anymore than someone flying the Union Jack condones grabbing people off the streets and forcing them...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

I think a few of you are missing the boat (so to speak) on pirate flags. What is it about the mythical pirates and pirate flags that kids find interesting, entertaining or intriguing?

Re: Smartkat Inflatable Catamaran

The 5 meter hulls are faster too. Wish I had we had set of those but all in all I'm pretty happy with our SmartKat.

I believe the cheapest option doesn't include a jib and I'm not sure how well...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

I still think the keelboat options are fairly expensive. $500 to take out a 23 footer with a cubby for three 4 hour blocks is the cheapest and doesn't seem all that attractive.

The bigger boats...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

:)

My son was in scouts and there's an annual week long camp that the boys love because they have an opportunity to do some very cool things: sleep in tree houses, spend the night on two competing...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

To the extent that that might be true it's easily reversible. Our kids enjoy video games probably as much as any other kid but it's not hard to get them outside. They LOVE any kind of trip including...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

Here's what I know of locally:

The sailing club I belong to costs $250 annually but there is a $50 discount for returning "skippers". The term "skipper" has an important meaning in this club and...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

Apparently boat ownership is in decline (http://www.tradeonlytoday.com/features/boat-shows/ft-lauderdale-international/watering-seeds-boating-growth/) in general, not just sailboats.

If you...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

As a new parent you really want to do the best for your kid and you get lots of input ;)

You'll be told that your kid should play an instrument because that will help them grasp math. You will be...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

I think focusing on youth programs is a great idea but let me ask you this. The girl in the above story got into sailing because her mother was a sailor.

So what would convince a couple of...

Re: This is hope! (3 young adults fix P30 and head out to sea)

Understood. I don't really have anything more to add (of value) anyway. Plus I have a respect for Captain Jack and his world view even if we aren't in complete agreement.

Re: This is hope! (3 young adults fix P30 and head out to sea)

This is where we are going to differ philosophically. I think our government policies play a very limited role in making that avenue attractive. Ultimately what it comes to is that guy in China is...

Re: This is hope! (3 young adults fix P30 and head out to sea)

I guess I see the long term decline in the number of well paying jobs as having more to do with business decisions rather than government policy decisions.

Manufacturing, as an example, is either...

Re: This is hope! (3 young adults fix P30 and head out to sea)

I guess the question is which policies you blame for what problems. To me the world economy is like this gigantic ship you only think you're steering. The direction it's headed now (in the general...

Re: This is hope! (3 young adults fix P30 and head out to sea)

Since I really don't know what Moxie's background is, it is also tempting for me to bring in a lot of my own history and the people I've know in an attempt to draw parallels.

It's all guesswork....

Re: This is hope! (3 young adults fix P30 and head out to sea)

Your income must be sufficiently greater than your expenses to allow you to save for a rainy day and to enjoy your life in the manner you wish.

You can focus your energy on income, expenses or...

Re: How often do you visit your boat during winter layup?

The more threads like this I read, the better just sticking to the sailing club and passing on boat ownership sounds. ;)

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

I think thats probably true. Boat ownership is either out of reach or too much hassle for many people, - young or old.

Rather than advertising boats, perhaps what should be advertised it...

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

Actually I was thinking that it's harder now to reach a large audience because of the larger number of media outlets. It used to be that a boat dealer could have a relatively cheap add on a local TV...

Re: wood mast

I'm thinking if the boat has a wooden mast it's either a very old boat or wood was a very deliberate choice. Not that you couldn't replace it with aluminum but that might significantly detract from...

Re: Is flying a pirate flag lame?

No matter what you do to your boat it's going to offend the sensibilities of someone, somewhere. I'm not recommending that people be deliberately crude and offensive, but I don't think pirate flags...
