Re: How do you stretch your season in the northeast

I sail through the winter out of Oyster Bay,NY on a 22' oday. We dress in layers and usually only stay out for a couple of hours. A little hot cider and rum helps. It is cold, but you have the...

Re: Milford and Port Washington

I did a fractional share on a boat in Port Wash. last season. Lots of nice restaurants, convenient water taxi, easy trip in and out of harbor. Oyster bay in nice too.

Re: Blackrock CT

Stayed at CC overnight two years ago. Easy to get to from the sound. Agree with previous comment. Nice people. Bar and food just ok. We stayed there on a Monday so the place was dead. Had to...

Re: Music for sailing: what floats your boat?

I catch your show when I can. It is really great. Unfortunately, I only get to listen to it when I have Fri. mornings off. When I use to sail on the south shore, your Fire Island...

Re: Are sailing schools worth it?

2 thousand seems a bit steep for a keel boat course/certification. I teach basic keelboat (US Sailing) in the summer and I think it is closer to $800. Also the one advantage of taking a course at a...

Re: This is hope! (3 young adults fix P30 and head out to sea)

Like most other commentors, I found the video very interesting. I give them I lot of credit for what they did. And yes I am a bit jealous. But I also found the narrator and his story to be a bit...

Re: Recommended weekend cruise from Port Washington

This is probably too late, but I just checked the LI page. I did Northport to PW on a return trip in August. I was a nice 6 hours sail. The launch at Seymour's was good, but the bathroom on shore...

Re: Teaching sailing

I teach on Sonars so it is probably a little different in the detail, but I have found you can only do so much to directly help your students. Once you have laid down a good foundation (and it seems...

Re: I want a nautical tattoo :)

A year or so ago I got a compass rose on my forearm. I wasn't going for "cute", but I am really happy with it. Being on my forearm it gets covered when I wear a dress shirt. My next one will be...

Re: marina near Branford/New Haven CT?

Thanks for all the input. I will start checking out your suggestions. I am not sure I want to deal with what seems like shallow water in Branford so I am also starting to look in New Haven harbor...

Re: marina near Branford/New Haven CT?

Thanks Denise, that looks like a great resource. I have heard it mentioned on the forum, but since I only get to do a cruising trip once a year I never really looked into it before. Chris

Re: Sailing specific songs

I don't know if anyone mentioned Stan Rogers yet, but he has many nautically themed songs. "Cliffs of Baccalleu" (sp.?) being my favorite. There are also several musical versions of "Christmas at...

I second the Goslings over ice with a wedge of lime. As I get older I don't seem to have time for mixers

Re: Sailing from Port Washington to Montauk

I second JimsCAL thoughts. Unless you have the need/want to get to a specific destination, I would pick a port within 30-40nm. I find that when I use this range I am more likely to try reach port...

Re: Sailing from Port Washington to Montauk

A couple of weeks ago I took a 3 day trip from from Oyster Bay to Black Rock Harbor (by Bridgeport) to Port Jeff. I was in a 36' mariner. We had to beat up wind the first day and it took us about 8...

Re: Anchoring in Oyster Bay, NY -- need advice

You may want to avoid the 20' area in West Harbor. The oyster dredgers work that area. If you stay to the southwest of the C"7" you will be in a good spot and you'll get some protection from the...

Re: Anchoring in Oyster Bay, NY -- need advice

I will preface this post with the fact that I have never anchored there myself, but I teach at the sailing school in west harbor. I have seen failrly good sized boats (45-60') anchored just north of...

I started at google, but that can be " too much of a good thing". For some topic like sailing and rum selection I find personal input to be more helpful than the "all knowing" google algorithm. So...
