Re: Connecting VHF to Chartplotter for DSC

I hooked a Garmin Chart plotter to my VHF. Same NMEA versions as yours. I could not get it to communicate, called the guy I bought the Garmin from and he said that Garmin has their own communication...

Re: Gel coat for 1987 C&C 35MKlll

There are shops that do it, they simply have the correct colour code for numerous old production boats, and mix it to match. Just like getting paint mixed for the house. Of course your gel coat may...

Re: Any advice for a Cleveland to Canada sail?

Leamington would be a very nice destination, very nice marina and water front area. Lots to see and do. You could stop at Put-in-Bay or Kelleys Island for a night to break the trip up. Any time...

Re: My introduction to Lake Huron

Harrisville is a pretty little harbour but a long way from any where. Where are you starting from? If you are in lower Michigan you might try Port Sanilac or Lexington. They have ramps there that...

Re: Running small 4 strokes for 8-12 hours

Years ago before Diesel, I had a 26 footer with a 9.9 Honda and a 24 footer with a 9.8 Merc. I used to cruise Lake Huron's North Channel every other summer.
Many times there seemed to be little or...

Re: C&C 35 with Mod Bulb Keel, Effect?

A friend of mine did exactly that with a MK 3 and casting from Mars Metal. A very nice cruising compromise, I sailed and raced on it and found it sailed very well. C & C with their performance...

Re: boat for bahamas, but limited by bridge clearance and draft

If you are only going out under the bridge once a year, why not take the mast down and eliminate this requirement? If you can find a mast hoist on both sides of the bridge it is a simple job to lower...

Re: itinerary tips for shorthanded bareboat out of BVI

Just a few weeks back from our first charter there. Highly recommend renting a vehicle in Leverick Bay and driving to the Baths, the drive is half the fun. Only about $75 for 24 hours, just ask at...

Re: Yamaha 15hp vs Honda 15hp outboard?

I had a 9.9 Honda on a keel boat a number of years ago and liked it. However a few years ago I rented a 16 foot fiberglass runabout to fish from. The guy had quite a few of these all with Yamaha's. I...

Re: Crossing into the US from Canada

I was under the impression that you did not need a station license any more. Is this only required if we go to the States?

I live on lower Lake Huron and cross several times a year. We just make...

Re: 2gmf concerns

If you have been motoring a fair bit you will get some water accumulating from your shaft seal. Might be where it is coming from.

Re: Conch Charters, BVI

Yes the Cyclades, we had booked the three cabin three head version but got the four cabin two head version. Worked great, the fourth cabin had two bunk beds and was great for storing duffels,...

Re: Conch Charters, BVI

We chartered with Conch three weeks ago. Had a Beneteau 43 and it was in great shape, customer service was also great. No issues what so ever, would definitely charter with them again.

Re: Celestial Navigation

It is a 25 and you are right, not a spot of rust on it anywhere :)

Always thought I would like to pick up a Plath or something nice, they are so shiny ;)

My one mile shot may have been luck

Re: Celestial Navigation

It has been years and I just used a cheap Davis but enjoyed doing it and best shots were within a mile of so doing a three point.

Sailing the BVIs in a weeks time and just went to the boat and got...

Re: What is the best sailing movie ever?

I liked Master and Commander, nice list there. I hate to admit it but I think it was the opening scene in Dove that first got me interested in sailing.

Re: DIY eye on wire halyard?

If you have not taken an halyard it is a out good opportunity. I take mine out every fall and wash them in Downy, smell really nice.

I just use some vinyl tape and attached about a 1/8" messenger...

Re: Cockpit Draining - Below waterline?

My through hulls exit through the hull behind the water line but ahead of the transom. Under way they are likely under water but at the dock they are a couple of inches above it so no worries.

Re: Wet core in the hull - what are the options?

Having way more experience with wet coring than I really want I will say it depends. A moisture meter can pick up high moisture in a solid hull, in the bottom paint, gel coat who knows.
I have cut...

Re: ICE box Drain plumbing

Re: How should True Wind be determined?

True wind is the natural wind and has nothing to do with the boat. Apparent wind is a vector addition of the true wind and the wind relative to the movement of the boat. i.e. the wind generated by...
