Re: Loner or belonger

Robert Putnam's "Bowling Alone" is an important book and a good read. It explains the social atomization that is now pervasive.
I really value the 30 years I have put into our local sailing club -...

Re: What to do with sailing books

We started a library at our sailing club - which has become the depository of many sailing related books from our members who pass away, or otherwise move on.

We can take more, but we are running...

Re: Not sure if this is the right sail trim

If it's very light (less than 5 kts) another trick is to put some crew weight to leeward -

Re: New Navy Ship

System has been cancelled.

Too costly, may not float.

All for only $ 3.5 billion each.

A terrible waste of OUR money and talent.

Re: Winter storage Sandusky OH

If you have a trailer, you have lots of options, and can save significant $ by getting it towed to the Erie country fair grounds (indoor storage) - about two miles from the Bay.

Re: What is bad about the Colgate 26?

An S2 7.9 in good shape can be had for about $ 15K.
They also sail very well (rate PHRF around 176).
And have good accomodations (5'5" head room) for two in comfort, or four very close friends. ...

Re: New to Sailing!

Two Quick Points -

1. YES, as to this . . "My question is should I buy a smaller boat, 14-18' to learn on for a year or so, before I move up to something larger like a 21-25'?"
But the J-24...

Re: a PHRF rating of 102

The Phrf rating is a valuable bit of information when boat shopping. It's really the only way to compare performance sight unseen.
Is it limited in its relavance? Of course, but so is everything...

Re: 1 rescued, 1 dead, 4 missing in Mobile Bay Regatta

Seems to me that the mistake made by nearly all the boats that got in trouble was that they did not drop and secure sail in time. If you are under bare poles it is very unlikely that you will be...

Re: 1 rescued, 1 dead, 4 missing in Mobile Bay Regatta

As nearly as I can tell from looking at archives from Sailflow and NWS radar, there was a half hour between a REALLY UGLY bow echo radar image and the time the big air hit the boats (racers and...

Re: Need Help with Neglected Boat

Many sailors just do not get the concept that some boats have a
really appreciable negative value - they are worth MUCH LESS THAN NOTHING.
You can invest thousands of hours and $ in them an STILL...

Re: Canadian Boats Selling in USA

Our club welcomes Canadians, and 26 of them died in the towers, by Jingo!!
So yeah, just to make up for it, we murdered 100,000 plus Iraqis who
had nada to do with it.

Re: Would anyone like a free wooden sloop?
