Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Is the "wreckers race buoy" off Key West?

Re: Handicapped Access to Salon?

I wonder if an organization such as CRAB (Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating) might be able to share any tips or ideas. Your boat is larger than the customized ones they sail, but you never know....

Re: Solomons, MD Marina

We just stayed one night at Spring Cove Marina, a bit further up Back Creek. Huge, private, spotless showers, well-kept grounds.

I wasn't there long enough to explore all the amenities, but I...

Re: Sandal-type Boat Shoes

I've never found a pair of Keen sandals that fit me well, but I am very happy with LL Bean's Explorer sandals. Very comfortable, very good grip, decent toe protection, non-marking and easier on the...

Re: Proper Way to Secure Horseshoe Buoy

I retract my suggestion...we lost the buoy in a 30-knot gust a few weeks ago. I am on the lookout for a better way to keep it attached to the bracket, and, sadly, a new horseshoe buoy or other...

Re: Solar phone/tablet chargers

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. It looks like some more research is in order; unfortunately, these chargers are not so cheap that you'd go buy a bunch, test them, and keep the one that performs...

Solar phone/tablet chargers

Gone are the days when my basic cell phone could be on standby for a week. Nowadays, I'm lucky to keep my smartphones or tablet charged for more than 12 hours.

Has anyone ever used one of those...

Re: 2013 Sailing Season

We're Fairview Marina. Yeah, that was probably us, heading out around 1:30. I am pretty sure we talked to each other via VHF as we were both heading out on Saturday as well trying to figure out how...

Re: 2013 Sailing Season

I am glad everyone is reporting the same high wind speeds yesterday. We were out in the afternoon on the Patapsco off Rock Creek and saw nothing lower than the 20s, with gusts in the low 30s. ...

Re: Proper Way to Secure Horseshoe Buoy

We've lost a horseshoe buoy on a windy day--and found it, more than an hour later, by returning a little "downcurrent" along our GPS track and keeping a sharp eye out.

I now secure it loosely...

Re: Smackdaddy needs your thoughts/prayers

The story of your loss has occupied me all day; looking at the photo of your family on your boat, I can't even begin to imagine the depth of your sorrow. I am at a loss for words.

My sincere...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

And here I thought I picked a somewhat challenging location--Ushuaia is correct! It's a neat city with quite a bit of "pioneer town" feeling to it and more than its fair share of seafaring history....

Re: Lisbon in May

I thoroughly enjoyed Lisbon last November--can't wait to go back and explore more.

To add to PCP's list, I would suggest a visit to the Museo do Oriente, located roughly between the center of town...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Well, that was a tough one. It wasn't until I saw the "Carthage - Hannibal" station sign that I was able to zero in on the area. How were the blue doors a hint?

Let's switch hemispheres for the...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Man, your're a tough grader! I am pretty sure this is the marina in your first picture, but Google Earth is no help in pinning down the exact name of the location. La Marsa? Sidi Bou Said?

The...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

With all your hints and the picture of the railroad station, I am going to guess Tunis, Tunesia, about 200 nm west of Malta.

Re: Scaffold

The issue is not so much doing your own work, as it is using a jack stand for something it wasn't intended to do (i.e., secure anything other than your boat). My yard periodically checks the stands;...

Re: Scaffold

My marina would have a conniption if I locked anything to the jack stands, so I'd exercise some caution with that approach.

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Yep, the old US 13 St. Georges Bridge and the new Delaware route 1 bridge. Another gateway to the Maryland and Delaware beaches!

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

The William Preston Lane Memorial Bridge, a.k.a. the Chesapeake Bay Bridge it is!

I cropped out the towers and if you looked closely, I figured the two suspension cables would be enough of a clue...

Re: Information while racing around the buoys

Thanks everyone for your insights!

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

OK, I'll bite one more time--the opposite coast from my first guess: the Point Atkinson lighthouse in West Vancouver, BC.
