Re: Uses for totally shot sail?

I had a old sail that seemed far too weathered to be of much use for anything. I ended up donating it to a friend who was building a "pirate ship" playhouse for his kids. The tattered look only...

Re: Tacking Asymmetric Spin

During very light-air jibes, we've used the bowman to run the asym through the slot by hand and along the new lee side of the boat. This speeds the transition. Might be worth a try during a...

Re: can I get my boat high?

I have my Catalina 22 launched this way all the time, but the marina crew operates the crane and they use a lifting frame (see the photo from tommays). All I have to do is take down the back stay to...

Re: Catalina 22 swing keel faring?

LL: There are some great online groups/forums for Catalina 22 owners you should check out. One is on Yahoo, search groups for Catalina 22. Another is the national organization home page: ...

Re: Mainsheet size?

First off, it appears that Harken is more conservative with their MWL's than other suppliers. They use a safety factor of at least 3 or 4, compared to others who use a factor of just 2. (Safety...

Re: Favorite Barometers

My little Gust has but one (for the galley sink) and it is kept closed except when in use.

Life is so much simpler with a smaller boat...

Re: Shoot Thru Hull Transducer

I installed a standard transom-mount transducer as a shoot-thru by epoxying it to the center of the hull, just forward of the keel. It works great and was much cheaper than the "made as shoot-thru"...

Re: Extreme Sailing Action

Once you start out, you're committed. Actually, you should be committed for even starting out. Not a good idea to leave the companionway wide open in that kind of water either. At least slide the...

My grandfather taught me a lot ...and most of it involved fixing things. So yes, I've always been a DIY'er. Working on my boat is worth my time in so many ways and many have already been touched...

I see no real need for a windlass. My 22' Catalina has a 14# Delta with 30' of chain and 250' of nylon rode through a Catalina Direct bow roller. My chain length is more than most would use on this...

I used to crew on a J-80 named "Uproar" because the keel hummed at speed. It started at around 8 or 10 knots, and increased in pitch the faster we went. Once the boat started humming, we ignored...
