There is a non-toxic solution, look at: www.sealcoats.com, a system consisting of glass hairs applied to a wet layer of epoxy via ionised air, downside is you can''t apply it yourselve....

Why should WD40 be a problem,I used it after a similar problem.I cleaned properly,after using WD40,in order to prevent dust and sand clogging up moving parts.
I see now problems.
