Re: Canning Your Food

With canning, botulism is the potential problem. The actual bacteria doesn't bother those of us with normal systems. It's the toxins. For an extra safeguard, boil the food for 10 minutes prior to...

I know an ER doc that started out as an engineer.
He too somehow manages.

Re: Sailing with excess brain power

In all honesty, engineers aren't typically considered to be people persons and they do love their details. A pediatrician and an ER doc don't get as detailed in their jobs and spend about 5 minutes...

Re: Sailing with excess brain power

When someone asks me, I just start quoting scripture and tell them God has a plan for everything. When their eyes glaze over, I know I can pass around the tip jar.

Re: Problems when reefing Main Sail

I'm about 30 minutes into the video.
I know you're probably frustrated. But don't worry. You'll get it.

Regarding your topping lift- it may be popping because your sail isn't fully hoisted and...

Re: My Tow vehicle

Yes. Not mentioned is that most aftermarket coolers are meant to expand on what is stock, not replace.

Re: My Tow vehicle

Regarding transmission coolers...

Automatics getting hot leads to failure. It doesn't hurt a thing to add an aftermarket one and it's an easy install.

If you check the transmission fluid and...

Re: My Tow vehicle

Rough idle when it's cold isn't a head gasket problem. The ignition has different settings from when the engine is cold vs at operating temp. Try cleaning the idle air control valve. If that fixes...

Re: Solo sailing

Excellent choice.
I breathe a sigh of relief when I can hear the water on sailing videos and click off of most sailing videos where the natural sounds are replaced by music (often the horrible and...

Re: Blue Water Boat vs. Production Boat Which one will you book passage on?

It was several years ago that I stumbled across it. I'll see if I can find it.

Re: Blue Water Boat vs. Production Boat Which one will you book passage on?

A 57' boat is probably going to be a bit more comfortable (less coffee and wine spillage) but boats smaller than 30' have done dangerous passages. And boats not thought of as bluewater boats have...

Re: Looking for a Live aboard marinas in DFW area?

Living aboard is pretty rare around here.

However, my Dad lived aboard his boat at Eagle Point Marina on Lake Lewisville. A quick check on their rules and they don't seem to address liveaboards at...

Re: Who goes first?

Well, you're skipper and that's final.

As for pecking order, have them each buy you dinner and a beer. Rank the dinners/beer from best to worst and that's the rest of your pecking order.

Re: My boat was boarded (and messed with) at anchor!

All this speak about electronics is boring.

OP, the proper response is to let your eyes go all shifty as you slip on some dark sunglasses. Position your hand inside a pocket as if you have a gun....

Re: Best sailing movie?

This must be true.
How many sailors, once going past hull speed, announce that they've reached hyper-drive?
Answer: All of them!

Re: Any ladies sail while preggers?

My hubby, who is new to sailing, said that he wants our child to grow up with sailing.
I think I'll keep him.

But I'm looking for experience from normal people. :p

Any ladies sail while preggers?

Kind of a rhetorical question as I know there are.
I'm currently gestating our first. Morning sickness has me off the boat for now. I miss it so badly. :(

I have plans to get back to sailing as...

Re: Is a 32' Sailboat Over-sized for a Beginner?

If you're living on it, go with the larger. The difference between sailing a 27' and 32'-33' is about negligible but you'll appreciate the extra room while living on it. It's possible to live on a...
