Re: Sailing Dog's Boat Destroyed By Fire

A general note of caution: a drying type of oil that remains in a bunched up rag can cause a fire through self ignition. I am not saying this is what happened here but rather that people should be...

Re: Masthead spinnaker bail, could this work?

It will not hold up! I would build an aluminum assembly that spreads the load between the current attachment point and the flat top of the masthead.

Re: Sewing machine corner

SailRite mentions that a triple stitch zig-zag is not a requirement for sail work. It allows you to do in one pass what a regular zig-zag requires two passes. Be happy with your regular zig-zag until...

Re: Good mail order place for battery cables?

Maine Sail has an excellent writeup on how to make battery cables. In it he has references to some sources that he feels are excellent. I believe GenuineDealz.com is who he suggests for cables.

Re: Winch maintenance Q, what nut is this?

Generally I would assume that this bolt would be the same configuration as the other bolts you already removed.
There is a tamper proof bolt head that has 3 slots that are off center and don't meet...

Re: Largest liveaboard *ever* sells for US .01

I wonder how many masts could be lined up on the flight deck for wind power :)

Re: Largest liveaboard *ever* sells for US .01

Probably would be a real problem single handing ..... especially when docking!

Re: Propeller cage

I vote for an underwater sickle mower, preferrably bow mounted with a sensor that automatically deploys it when a crab/lobster/shrimp pod is detected.

Re: Aftermarket Antenna for Raymarine Chartplotter??

One thing to watch for is how you connect to the chart plotter. I have an E80 plotter and a Raymarine GPS unit that talks to the chart plotter via sealink (I think).
The E80 has NMEA in and out but...

Re: What do I do if someone anchors too close?

It makes no difference if you have insurance or not, it will just take a bit more effort.
You have a police report and witnesses, it's not too late!

Re: What do I do if someone anchors too close?

You indicate bent stanchions - that usually adds up very very quickly. As far as I know you can't just un-bend stainless pipe like that unless it was very very minor. There is nothing more annoying...

Re: What's the difference? Help route planning.

I would suggest you have a look at Active Captain (activecaptain.com) and look at the reviews that other people have posted about various places.

Re: Crossing from West Vancouver to Sidney

The 'avoid staying somewhere' is going to be a problem if you want to leave at 4 am 'cos the ferries don't run at night. On the other hand, if you found somebody to drop you off at Fisherman's Cove...

Re: 1980 30ft Catalina needs LED Lights

I would suggest Marine LED Bulbs for your boat (http://store.marinebeam.com/bulbs.html).
I just replaced all mast lights on my Catalina 36 with their lights. All the lights were current driven, not...

Re: West Vancouver to Sidney in an unknown boat

Why don't you ask for the new boat to be delivered by (or with) the current owner ?
Cash can do a lot of convincing :)

Re: Yacht Hardstand Victoria BC

Sounds about right ... that's per day but you do not pay on the haul or splash day. Did you look at the haul costs ???? Don't forget to add the power wash costs (mandatory). Better be sitting down...

It's really not THAT bad going to Sidney. I agree that traffic going to the western communities and up the Malahat is a huge problem but not the traffic to Sidney. Re the ferry dumping cars - time...

Re: Oops!!!

Canoe Cove and Westbay Marine both use travel lifts with remote control. The operator can go wherever he wants to get the best viewing position.
