Re: northill anchor

I have an original Northill in galvanized. It can't be beaten for setting in questionable bottoms. I do use a trip line at the crown, so that I never have to donate it to the bottom, should it get...

Re: Last one for tonight. Tiller pilots

No Question that the Simrad TP30 (now the TP32) is much stronger and faster than the comparable Autohelm unit. I have had both, and agree 100% that
1- they are not waterproof.
2- You do want a...

Re: Propane Powered Outboard Engine Experience??

Gotta love that Tohatsu reliability (self-serving grin) :)

Re: Propane Powered Outboard Engine Experience??

That sounds like a service (or possibly warranty) issue, that should be reasonable to address.

Re: Tohatsu 4 stroke 6HP starting procedure

Yes, draining is best, but any sludge in the very bottom of the bowl is at least not in the passages, so running dry works during the season. If you know for certain that you will be running again...

Re: Propane Powered Outboard Engine Experience??

As an outboard dealer, we looked at handling the Lehr line. It appears that there isn't any parts/repair/support network in place (as of a year ago), aside from warranty replacement of a whole motor,...

Re: Mercury 4hp four stroke first use report oil overheat.

The Tohatsu/Nissan/Merc/Evinrude 4/5/6 4-stk can use a flushing adapter that screws into either the leg (some models) or under the powerhead. Better to run it in a test tank (garbage can) as then the...

Re: Single Lever Engine Control

Can you repair the old one? Spinlock does make a "hidden" unit. Requires a separate starter switch if electric start. I believe it uses standard Morse cables, so you might need adapters at the OB end.

Re: Propane Powered Outboard Engine Experience??

We have had reports of the LP bottles icing up in the lower Niagara river when the J70's were running WOT for a time. Aside from that, they seem to run very well.

Re: Tohatsu 25 Air intake issue.

Not knowing your model (2-stk, 4-stk carbed or EFI), can only speculate that you have an old 2-stroker with work ignition wires. But a common problem is exhaust ingestion.

Re: Tohatsu 4 stroke 6HP starting procedure

The EPA cap can be a problem. The older caps are available, and will fit.
You must disconnect the fuel hose and run the carb dry at the end of the day, or risk varnishing in the carb.
If you don't...

Re: Cutting drain hole in bedded teak

Our rails are teak, and the hood attaches with screws. Since there is a "dam" molded into the deck under the hatch slide, I didn't bother to bed the top hood onto the rails the last time we removed...

Re: Cutting drain hole in bedded teak

Chris, Our 1968 Hinterhoeller HR28, hull 53, has the same kind of sea hood, but with a notable difference: the rails are independent, and the hood is open at the lower forward edge. It is also...

Re: Nissan / Tohatsu 6h 4 stroke

A 2-cylinder 2-smoke OMC 9.9/15 is a completely different animal from a 1-cylinder 4-stroke Tohatsu. On the Tohatsu, one swaps carbs for different CFM delivery... on some OMC models, the CFM is...

Re: Nissan / Tohatsu 6h 4 stroke

You have a displacement hull. Your boat is at hull speed. Even a 300 hp OB would not exceed that speed unless you started to dig the stern in and attempt to plane/surf. It's a function of waterline...

Re: Nissan / Tohatsu 6h 4 stroke

Absolutely not. If you are near sea level, the correct jets are already in the appropriate carb. If you re-jet richer, you will accomplish nothing but fouled plugs. Period. If you need to convert...

Re: Nissan / Tohatsu 6h 4 stroke

No. The alternator is only standard on the UL SailPro.

Yes, the MFS4,5,6 are the same block.

No. They are 3 different carbs; one each for the 4, 5, and 6. The throats are different sizes. If...

Re: Outboard Starting Procedure

Incorrect. The crankcase will not be anywhere near dry when the motor stalls, just too lean to run. In decades of outboard service, I have never seen a lack of lubrication from running until stall....

Re: Standard Horizon Matrix AIS+ GX2150

Yep. And no independent AIS antenna needed. And no extras needed, aside from a GPS connection. Works, works well, and is cheap and reliable. On the Great Lakes, we are mostly concerned about...

Re: Standard Horizon Matrix AIS+ GX2150

The SH is a great unit. If you are looking for AIS targets, and not complex radar solutions, it is definitely the way to go. Excellent bang for the buck. I have one, and my customers who have them...

Re: High Thrust Prop for Tohatsu 9.9 on Nonsuch 22

Indeed. The 3-blade unit for the 4/5/6 is very good. Just not as sophisticated as the 4-blade units for the 8/9,8 and 9.9/15/18

Re: High Thrust Prop for Tohatsu 9.9 on Nonsuch 22

Incorrect. Look at one of the HT props. HUGE blades, negative rake... Moves a LOT of water at slow speeds. Dee http://www.rubexprops.com/prop-info/2010/solas-high-thrust-propeller/
