Re: Liveaboard Marinas

A dock that is close to parking...especially in the winter; I am in the northeast. Someone mentioned dock carts - yes. We have a nice shower/bathroom which helps. In the winter we have a jury...

Re: Annual Long Island Sound Vacation

Watch Hill is a wonderful spot and well worth the long channel. I can't agree that Stonington is a much better place at all...and I like Stonington. I have been anchored there (Watch Hill) in a few...

Re: Summer Cruise itinerary: NYC to Shelter Isl, Sag, Montauk, Block, MV & back

I guess no one is paying attention to this forum these days as your post has been up a week and I, an infrequent visitor, am the first response.

First, I assume you have checked the tides and...

Re: Single handed sailing in BVI

If you are tethered though any slowdown of the boat should make it easier to get back on, no?

Re: Groton CT to Branford CT

Pick up the 2015 Eldridge Tide and Pilot book. and +2 on the tide. Currents are stronger in the eastern end of LIS.

Re: NY/CT/LIS Boatyard & Marina help?

Neighborhoods are fine... once you are 100 yards or so from the station it's all residential. I will add that there are no grocery stores in that part of Norwalk so bring your provisions with.

Re: NY/CT/LIS Boatyard & Marina help?

Norwalk Cove is good. Big marina. Bit of a walk from the East Norwalk Station though.
I am docked in Stamford, which was mentioned and it is a shorter walk to a variety of marinas. There is...

Re: My chart question again

There are still marine stores that will print charts for you. Landfall navigation in Stamford, CT does this. I am sure they would mail it to you if you can't find a place close to home.

Re: Headed for LI Sound and Beyond

I anchored there in about 9' of water last year, just for an afternoon snack and swim on a run from Block Island to drop off some guests at Dodson's in Stonington. I thought I had set the anchor,...

Re: Tomorrow we move aboard and set off

Are you heading down the Hudson or out the St. Lawrence? I am guessing the latter as I am not sure there is enough water for you in the river.

Re: The Talk

I have not one but two thread veering questions:

Do you pump out the holding tank after every day the head is used?

How well does your vacuflush system work?

Re: What do you do for food on a day cruise?

Dinty Moores Beef Stew. Kidding. A can or 2 are rusting away in a locker somewhere in case I get blown out to sea or something.

Question Re: The Talk

I'm your captain, listen to me, I'm your captain, yeah yeah yeah.... lol

My talk is mostly about where the PFDs are kept, fire extinguishers and cold beverages and watching out for booms. I also...

Re: I Equate it to Driving in a Bad Snow Storm!

I reef more often than most as I know a few things. The first being that it will be a more comfortable ride and more easily manageable main if reefed. The second is that if the wind lightens it is...

The Talk

We have had similar discussion here before I think. It's the head thing. I was talking sailing with a friend the other day and he related a story about he and his wife taking another couple sailing...

Re: Interesting little video

Nice video. That will be me in about 4 years...only about 30 years older and on a bigger boat with refrigeration and a shower!

Re: Headed for LI Sound and Beyond

I always like to put in a plug for Watch Hill, RI. I much prefer it over Fisher's Island and it is worth the 2 mile channel. I hope this beautiful weather we have been experiencing up here holds...

Re: Liveaboard woman alone

From what I hear everyone living aboard in NYC is living across the river in NJ. It costs me around 7K per year for a 41' boat in Southwestern CT. I am a half mile from a train station and can get...

Re: Newbie renting a keelboat - dumb idea?

It's a different animal from a sunfish as you would be dealing with 2 sails. Otherwise it still has pointy end and a tiller and would be a zillion times less tippy so if they will rent you one I...

Re: Size vs. Condition/Amenities?

More to consider. The larger boat will likely have a more kindly motion and not just at anchor. I used to sail a pearson 30 which was a lot more fun to sail than my current boat, a roomy, 41'...

Re: The trend in new cruising boats....

And why all the dual wheels? I asked at a local boat show and the salesman told me it was for easier access to the stern and swim platform. Not sure if this way true or not but we charted a 50'...

Re: Winch whoops..what'd I do?

depends on the winch and the angle. I have a mast winch where you really have to watch it to avoid a wrap like that and have sailed on several boats where that is the case. I find it to be a lot...

Re: 12V refrig units and power

Where are you moored?

I have a solar panel and a wind generator that are connected to 2 batteries that are dedicated to just running the fridge/ice box. I am at the dock though, in Connecticut,...

Re: Westbrooke CT

I spend a night or so anchored at Duck Island every season. Will have to dink in to check out Bills. Thing is I usually do a long day from Stamford to Westbrook on the way to points further east...
