Re: Headed for LI Sound and Beyond

I'm enjoying reading your trip report. We thought West Harbor was beautiful, but I'm not sure how much sleep you'll get if the winds are from the NE.

Either way, enjoy and I'll continue to live...

Re: Rust stains on non-skid

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. On the boat now but the Barkeepers Friend is at home. I'll give it a try next weekend and if it doesn't work I'll make a trip to Defender.

Rust stains on non-skid

We have some rust stains on the non-skid near our bow. Any tips for removing them? Mr. Clean magic eraser and Clorox cleanup haven't worked.

Thanks.

Re: Two weeks in Block/Narragansett Bay

Thank you for sharing your anchoring technique, Minnewaska. We will be committing that to memory. I had read that Danforths don't do well when the wind shifts, but I didn't know how much of a wind...

Re: Two weeks in Block/Narragansett Bay

These suggestions are all great - thank you everyone!

We stopped at Defender on the way to the boat yesterday to get a Danforth 12# hi-tensile anchor, chain, and line. We'd prefer a new gen but we...

Re: Two weeks in Block/Narragansett Bay

Jim,

It crossed my mind yesterday that with an overnight anchor we could stop at Pt. Judith instead of heading back to Block. Thanks for the tip on the inner harbor. It sounds much nicer than...

Re: Concussions

CD, I had noticed you hadn't been on the board and was hoping you were cruising. Sorry to hear about this.

I hope your symptoms completely resolve soon. I know that this sailor will be much more...

Re: Two weeks in Block/Narragansett Bay

Thanks everyone for the restaurant suggestions.

As for the anchor, we are now rethinking our plans to hold off on buying an overnight anchor until the offseason. I have to admit, in researching...

Two weeks in Block/Narragansett Bay

We are getting very excited about our upcoming two-week cruise. Five weeks and two days to go, but who's counting?

This is our second year with the boat (third year sailing) and last year we went...

Re: Newport area during the boat show

Thanks everyone. At this point I think we're going to skip the show. We're having a difficult time fitting it in without feeling like we're on a schedule. We've been to the one in Newport before...

Re: Flat Fenders?

From almost all of the replies it sounds like these aren't the proper application for us. Guess it's back to squeezing the round ones in the lazarette.

Re: Newport area during the boat show

Thanks for the info. Yes, we were planning on going strictly for the boat show and then spending a few days in Newport the following week.

A little over five weeks to go!

Newport area during the boat show

We are just under six weeks away from our two week cruising vacation (not that I'm counting or anything) and Block Island and Narragansett Bay are on the itinerary.

We were thinking of hitting up...

Flat Fenders?

We were in Defender today and saw Taylor Made Modular Flat Fenders. Does anyone have any experience with them, or thoughts? It seemed like they would take up a lot less space in our lazarette than...

Re: Passenger sick for two days after day sail???

I discovered that for myself last September when we were sailing to Block. We were sailing downwind in 3-4 foot seas so it was very rolly. I was doing just fine until I went down below to use the...

Re: Jib car gets stuck on track

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Mr. Cthoops took some Sailkote, a hammer, and a punch to the track. Some careful tapping and cleaning, and voila. The car moves all of the way forward.

We...

Re: Tow or Not

While I haven't personally bern through Plum Gut or Hell Gate, I've read enough about them to know that I wouldn't tow my dink through them, nor would I tow it for 100 miles.

Which weather/wind apps & sites are most accurate?

Now that the rainy/windy 4th of July has passed, I'm hoping to get out on the water for what's left of the holiday weekend. However, the wind forecasts on the various sites and apps that I'm looking...

Re: iPad users only

We have an iPad with the 3G (so it has the built-in GPS) on our boat. We use iNavX (a bit of a learning curve, but pretty good), AyeTides, SailFlow, and BuoyData.

Re: Jib car gets stuck on track

We're not sure what's blocking it. Dirt and gunk is certainly a possibility. It's not mounted on a teak toe rail, so it's definitely not Cetol, but I would think the same method would apply.

Jib car gets stuck on track

Our boat included a roller furling 130 genoa and we bought a new-to-us 98 jib during the off season.

When we use the jib, the bottom is full while the head flaps incessantly. We've figured out...

Re: Crewed for the first time yesterday - wow!

Atlas, that made me cringe just reading it. Ouch.

On another note, I got an e-mail asking me back for the next two Wednesday races. Whoo-hoo!

Now to go buy those kneepads....
