Re: Books to get kids interested in sailing?

My local library had "Swallows and Amazons". I read it and then had my daughter read it. She wasn't as hooked as I'd hoped, but she did read the whole book. I had her write down any terms she didn't...

Re: Big Freakin' Sails

My first BFS.

I've been crewing on a Cal 33-2 this summer. Just local beer can races for the spring and summer series. I've sailed maybe a dozen times with this boat and crew. (I've been crewing...

Re: Clothing optional sailing

Here's a blog posting from Zero To Cruising on the topic of nudity at anchorages:
http://www.zerotocruising.com/a-time-and-a-place/

The gist seems to be that folks ought to be sensitive to the...

Re: Clothing optional sailing

I think the conversation ran itself out. Those who think nudity is silly got their jokes in. Some who do sail naked said so. Next.

Some more stories of nude sailing would have been nice, but...

Re: Boat recommendations for a Newbe

I'm somewhere around steps 2-3. I've been crewing on OPB (other people's boats) for a few years and really enjoy it. But only going out on race days is very limiting. Joining a sailing club sounds...

First race of the year - in sleet!

We had our first race of the season this evening. Just after the start it started sleeting! Temperature was in the 40s with a wind chill into the 30s. Brrr! We had 12 boats out, 2/3 of the fleet....

About 50,000 Euros according to their web site (http://www.afep-marine.com/info_revolution22.html). There's a great series of photos showing the build of the first one on their Facebook page...

Re: Cortez 16

I suggest you check out Trailer Sailor (http://trailersailor.com). They are aimed more at the smaller, trailerable boats. You can find a lot more general info here on SailNet, but TS is probably...

Re: First boat for small 9 yr old girl?

This is a bit off the topic and strays into armchair psychiatry, but I'll take a stab at it.

Find a role model she wants to emulate. For my daughter, she really likes reading, especially about...

Re: First boat for small 9 yr old girl?

Thanks for all the great advice. I also found this article (http://www.practical-sailor.com/issues/37_8/boatreview/seven_dinghies_10554-1.html) that reviewed seven dinghies. The Laser Bug and Open...

First boat for small 9 yr old girl?

I'd like to get my daughter her first sailboat. She's weighs about 50# soaking wet and is just over 4 feet tall. I thought an Optimist was the obvious choice, but wow  are those things...

Re: Reaching struts

I've seen this problem on the J30 I crew on. With the spinnaker pole close to the forestay, it's almost impossible to trim the pole back. I've often found myself putting my hand out as a human...

Re: Newbie from Southern Chesapeake Bay

I'm sorry, "Sailing to Nowhere" and "meet up" mean nothing to me. Are those web sites? sub-forums somewhere here on SailNet? I have no idea what you're talking about.

I think you meant to create a new thread, not reply to my introduction. Maybe the forum database has a problem?

Re: Books to get kids interested in sailing?

Excellent. Exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for.

She already has her own kayak. I'm hoping to get her into Optimist lessons in the next year or two. We still don't have a family boat, but I...

Re: First time on the water today, I could use some advice!

I'd think it'd be worth investing in a sailing instruction book. There are many good ones. For me (maybe I'm just old) having a piece of paper with a drawing showing the points of sail and how the...

Here's (https://sites.google.com/site/pocketyachtcruising/sailing-a-compac-19) a site by a guy who went through the selection process and ended up with a Com-Pac 19. Worth a read.

Re: The future of the sailing world. Why are there so few young people cruising??

I'm a newbie, but I'll throw a few cents worth into the conversation.

I'm forty-something and just getting into sailing. Been crewing for a few years in weekly races.

1) Sailing is and needs a...
