Re: PC Chartplotter advice?

Hands down go with OpenCPN. For charts do a search of torrent sites for the CM93 version 2 charts. I made a swap a while back with a fellow sailor here in NS of my CM charts for his Canadian charts...

Re: Pleasure Craft Operator Card

Just attempted to reach the site. Got the message that it is coming in the future. Looks like maybe you'll have to wait a spell or contact the card company and have the payment recinded and...

Re: Sailable projects?

We paid 900 for a fixer upper. I had figured on spending 1800 to bring her back to life. That came in closer to 2800 when all was said in done. New bottom job expoxy sealed and anti...

Re: 1980 30ft Catalina needs LED Lights

I redid the running lights on the boat I bought several years ago. I used attwood LEDs and they are great. You'd have to go the next size up being 30 feet but they are still much less then...

Re: Pointing Problem

Last year when I put my boat in it was tacking reasonably well. As the season progessed I found that my tack to strbrd was getting worse all the time. When we finally pulled it last fall I found a...

Re: Making Your Boat Unsinkable

I have read an article about adding foam flotation. The 22 to 24 cu feet seems about right for the weight you have mentioned. Space can always be found usually at the very front of the v-berth and...

Re: Outboard Motor Lift Bracket: 1 Me : 0

Our bracket was giving me problems last year in getting it up or down. Finally it seemed to get stuck in the up position. At that point the cavitation plate was only 3 inches under water but...

Re: Weather Gods...F**# Off.

Lol I hear ya. I have already had to push back my launch date by one week here in Nova Scotia due to the weather :(. Its way colder then last year and we've had pretty much nothing but rain for the...

Re: A bluewater live-aboard for under $20k

First what do you consider to be a bluewater boat? I'm in the camp that blue water saling is anytime you are more then 24 hours running time from shore. Blue water boats should have minimal...

Re: Need to seal this up:

You can go with what Denise has suggested, although I would op for the style that has a screw on cap and plug assembly rather then the push on. The other option is a thru hull for wire....

Re: Hauled the boat - What's this on my keel?

I did the bottom of my boat last spring with Petit high build epoxy. While most of the previous bottom paint was removed not all of it was. After being in the water last year about 5 1/2...

Re: Furling Jib

I have a barton furler on my boat and its somewhat similar. We kept the forestay. The swivel attaches to the sail and halyard. The drum attaches behind the forestay preferably 3 or 4 inches....

Re: Recommend for trailer sailer with a real head?

Hmm not sure what you consider being a 'real' head. Here are several photo's of the head on my 22 footer. I consider it to be 'real' although headroom is lacking. Not much to be done about that on...

Bristol 32 for eastern seaboard to caribbean and cruising

I wondering what folks might have to say about this boat. It would be a full time live aboard. We would sail from Nova Scotia to the Bahama's the end of October each year and cruise the...

Re: Things you would only see in a marina!

Wow I thought my memory was bad. :laugher They swapped the gold out on the jet before offloading it to the false engine in the van. If you remember the van when it crashed the engine container was...

Re: How many women here own their own boat?

Hiee all,

Well I own my own boat. I bought a fixer upper 3 years ago and spent 2 years getting her ready for the water once again. I spent this year getting a bit of a feel for her and trying to...

Re: Docking with an outboard

I typically set the outboard to face straight forward and use the tiller for steerage. I also leave my OB in the up position as the cavitation plate is still under the water by 4 or 5 inches like...

Re: Hurricane leslie coming north, need I be concerned?

This may help you. I was concerned about Leslie on Monday hitting me here in Nova Scotia but the track is now well to the east. We will get swells but nothing horrendous.

Re: Free or low cost GPS navigation software?

My vote is for OpenCPN running under Linux. I happen to use Mint 12 currently. OpenCPN works very well ie version 3.0.x. Linux mint installs somewhat like Windoz but with way fewer questions from the...

Re: Capsizing fears

I don't think you can make a boat capsize 'proof' so therefor the next best option is to make her unsinkable. Some have mentioned tight hatches etc but unless they are offshore they will let in a...

Re: Replace standing rigging?

I was curious about that myself earlier this year as my boat is set up the same. While it could be DIY the crippers are very expensive so likely it is not.
They should be double nicro fittings for...

Re: Capsizing fears

I thought the 'grow some balls' comment was rude and uncalled for. It is acutally deserving of a temporary suspension from the site in my opinion! On the net you really never know who it is that is...
