Re: Sewing Machine: Long Arm worth the extra $?

In addition to walking-foot, you might want to be aware of compound walking-foot -- has both drop-feed (bottom-feed) and needle-feed (top-feed), with an alternating presser-foot (walking-foot). The...

Re: Sewing Machine: Long Arm worth the extra $?

My understanding is that lacking a multi-point, multi-step zig-zag machine, the same effect of strength and durability can be made by multiple passes with a two-point, single-stitch machine, and that...

Re: Sewing Machine: Long Arm worth the extra $?

Jimgo is describing what I think is called multi-point, multi-step. A three-point, two-step machine sews two stitches each way. A four-point, three-step machine sews three stitches. Too long of a...

Re: Sewing Machine: Long Arm worth the extra $?

Bravopapa,

You might want to clarify your post with the size of your boat.

I've never made or repaired sails. I'm DIY and have made cushions, biminis, dogers and covers with a standard sized...

Re: Speedseal -- best place to order?

I recommend directly from SS. I called the number, and they knew for my engine that there were different water pumps installed that required different SpeedSeals. The agent told me what to look for...

Re: Hat recommendations

I have tried several Tilly hats, and cotton duck with not too wide a brim seems best. Artificial fiber and/or a wide brim bend back in the wind.

Re: Jerry can & fender covers material?

Sunbrella is not very abrasion resistant and might not be suitable for fenders.

Boat Blanket has worked well for me.

Re: Good prices on Sunbrella?

In Florida and along the gulf, in addition to the UV resistant fabric, folks might also want to consider using Tenara or similar UV resistant thread. As for installing snaps or grommets, you can...

Re: Installing a Boom Brake

Our boat is end-boom sheeted, and for the mid-boom attachment of the boon-brake, we were concerned that the spar might break at the attachment point. To mitigate that possibility I through bolted...

Re: Sailrite LS-1 or LSZ-1?

Not having made sails, the following is academic. The LSZ-1 zig-zag width is 5 mm. James Grant's Sailrite sail construction series states that the zig-zag stitch should be 3/16" (or just about 5 mm.)...

Re: Sailrite LS-1 or LSZ-1?

Re: Sailrite LS-1 or LSZ-1?

Although lacking personal experience, if zig-zag is merely perhaps nice to have, zig-zag could be yet another source of potential adjustment problems.

Re: Sailrite LS-1 or LSZ-1?

If you decide on purchasing a Sailrite machine from Sailrite, you might want to wait for a sale.

Also a zig-zag machine is not necessary for cushions.

Re: Sailrite LS-1 or LSZ-1?
