Re: Accidently Aged Rum...

Yeah. If the rum was stored in a glass bottle I would say absolutely no problem at all. In plastic? I'm not so sure.

I think the lesson here is, don't let your rum sit around that long!

Re: Master Plan to Cruise and Pay For It

I would say that expecting "paying crew" to offset your costs is pretty optimistic. Before you have an OUPV license you cannot charge people a fee for sailing with you. You can share expenses, but...

Re: bluewater pocket cruiser

If you are planning on ramp launching the boat (as opposed to having a travel-lift pick it up off the trailer and set it in the water) then you probably need to forget about the Flicka, the Cape...

Re: bluewater pocket cruiser

First off, be aware that crossing the Gulf Stream in the wrong kind of conditions can be serious business. People have died doing this.

Second, there isn't any towable sailboat that is going to be...

Re: Is Florida all its cracked up to be?

Yep. Read some time back that nearly 2/3rds of those who move to Florida will move away again within 2 years. The issues you mentioned, of course. I think another very big one, though, is that they...

Re: Cruiser versus motor sailer

Good answers to the other questions you asked. As to sailor vs. sailer...

A sailor is a person who sails. Different types of boats include daysailers, motorsailers, etc.

This is generally...

Re: Goofy boater attaches shark to car

Maybe it's a regional thing. In my entire life (having lived in Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, North Carolina, Colorado, and now Florida) I've never seen it, except in movies or on TV.

Re: captainbob

It is still illegal for a U.S. citizen to travel to Cuba simply for a vacation. In fact, while Obama has issued executive orders to change the enforcement of the existing laws, none of the laws...

Re: Goofy boater attaches shark to car

Actually, despite what you see in TV and movies, there is practically no one who really does this. In my nearly 60 years of living in states where hunting is popular, and hunting myself, I have never...

Re: engine size

True, but even with that there is a limit where you are only adding weight and greater fuel consumption, without doing anything to improve the sailboat's ability to move through the water. What's...

re: outboard without reverse gear

This is quite common with tiny outboards (by which I mean those less than 5hp or so). It is a bit of an inconvenience, but only a bit. A full transmission just would not be feasible on these small...

Re: Florida is at it again

Yes, mostly they are. They are done so that legislators can have their photo opportunities, and can have their moment on video. Despite the pretense, they are almost never done so that legislators...

Re: Out Island 37 (372?)

No offense, but I don't think Morgan ever made a boat that they called an "Out Islander." They made a wide variety of boats, in a range of sizes, that they designated "Out Island" (no "er" on the...

Re: Eating for a dollar a day in the Bahamas

Just another advertisement for Navionics. Ask yourself, what possible purpose does posting that picture serve? Sorry to break it to you capta and Brent, but you have fallen for it. Trust me,...

Re: Passports

Or even if you don't. I did more international travel when I lived in Denver than I have in the last few years living in Florida. In this day and age, EVERYONE should have a passport.

Re: Help A College Student! Help me understand some things about Sailing.

I get the context now, and I sympathize. But it is no surprise that people were so skeptical, because the numbers just do not add up.

Re: Would anybody be interested in an electric outboard like this?

"For the most part" being the operative words. Somewhat off topic, but I ran into yet another ad yesterday, the likes of which I see on a too-frequent basis. In this case it was a 17,000 lbs sailboat...

Re: Would anybody be interested in an electric outboard like this?

Just for the sake of those who aren't familiar with the conversion... 1.2kW is just a hair over 1.5 horsepower.

Re: Would anybody be interested in an electric outboard like this?

Okay, so the web page says that the battery pack is 6kwh. Reasonable for a 90 lbs. battery. But, again, 9.9 hp is 7.4 kilowatts. So there is no way you're running a 9.9 hp engine for 5 hours on a 6...

Re: Would anybody be interested in an electric outboard like this?

I'm sorry, but the math is just not adding up for me. 9.9 horsepower is about 7400 watts. Run it for 5 hours and you need 37 kilowatts of energy. In a 90 lbs. battery? That's about 20 times the...

Re: Any advantage/disadvantage to registering a boat in a particular state?

As outbound points out, there is a difference between state registration and federal documentation. Regardless of that, though, a lot of states will require you to register the boat even if it is...
