Re: First boat for small 9 yr old girl?

Just bought my little guy a Zuma. He's 9 years old.

He has the rigging and operation all figured out and we haven't even had it on the water yet.

Sailing lessons this summer, then...

HelloSailor!

Yep, guess what? The stuff peeling off was 5200 painted over with VC17M Extra. And the worst part is... I am the one who put it on! I must be getting...

Re: Keel Patch Required?

Thanks CalebD!

Yes, I think it is just paint, and calk of some sort. So, if scrape & sand, will it be necessary to paint with epoxy paint prior to applying the anti foul? If so, what type of...

Keel Patch Required?

Hello all,

Well, spring is just around the corner and I'm making my "to do" list for the Merit. I usually paint the hull, keel and rudder with “VC17M EXTRA with Biolux” anti foul paint e/o...

Flying the Gennaker

Does anyone out there fly a Gennaker? We typically sail our Merit 25 with a crew of 2, and sometimes my 9 year old son in addition, so the Spinnaker is not something I am ready to risk .

Re: Turned Around - Yikes!

Oh, also...
We have quite a bit of rake. I tie a bucket of water to the main halyard, and it doesn't even touch the mast. Not to mention that I need tangs on the backstay tensioner, as it is...

Unhappy Re: Turned Around - Yikes!

How accurate is your wind assessment? Did you guess at 28 kts?
Well... the wind was oscillating and gusting. I know it was reading 24-26 knots on the gauge going upwind. IF we were traveling at...

Re: Turned Around - Yikes!

Thanks both of you for the advise. I'll go over this info and craft a plan for the next outing (which, sadly will not be until next spring - she comes out for the winter in 2 days)

Turned Around - Yikes!

We were out this past weekend and the wind was blowing from the South of the lake (very unusual for this lake) at 12-18 knots. We had a nice, long pleasurable sail downwind about 10 miles. We had...

Re: V berths

V-berth in the Merit 25 is roomy, but we have to sleep feet toward the bow, which puts my head right near the potty (note: we keep a VERY clean potty)!

Re: Family sailing report with photos and embedded questions

Looks like some wonderful family fun!

I found this video to be very informative on backstay tension - especially the video of the actual sail with and without backstay tension...

Re: So dumb its funny ... or just sad?

Common sense = at least 1 sailer on the boat and a tether tied from the boat to a flotation device for those in the water (and ALWAYS hold onto that tether!)

Re: Tohatsu 6hp Sail-Pro Version

I purchased a 6hp Tohatsu 4-stroke with a 25" shaft last season. Beautiful motor, and light, in my opinion, for its size (long shaft).

It does vibrate a bit, probably louder than my 2 cylinder 2...

Re: Over Powered in 30 knots?

I agree! My Merit 25 doesn't do well at all in high winds with just the jib up, but does "OK" on the Mainsail alone
