Re: Merit 25 sailors?

This is the same part that broke. Mine are stainless straps that fatigued with age and use. Easy fix but we had to retire from racing. Luckily it wasn't blowing very hard.

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

I can't remember what I had in 15 kts true but the caps were at or around 28-31 on the Loose gauge and the lowers were 24-28. The aft checks were lose. And honestly, you probably don't need them on...

Re: Seeking winter repair advice

Where are you hauled? At Herrington Harbour north they can tent it and put in a heater to get the paint to dry properly. I would just wait until warmer temps.

Re: Light air/Downwind sail choices

So in the commercial for the Bamar furler they get a good furl? I watched it but they cut off the last bit where they were furling it up in light air and it didn't look great.

I'm not against...

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

I can't seem to find other pics of my boat, I must've lost them in transitioning to the new computer. Oh well. There are a bunch on the skedaddle site.

The boat is fast and responds well to...

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

I have a 3350 MORC section. I looked at that tuning guide and I think it's a little high. In San Fran it's windy and I think that works fine, but on the bay you need a little more give. And I use a...

Re: Light air/Downwind sail choices

The flatter the sail is the better furl you'll get. An A2 kite won't furl for sh*t, but an A0 will, and even an A3. Basically if you can get away with out using a furler or sock, then don't bother....

Re: Light air/Downwind sail choices

Most cruising sailors think a code 0 is a downwind sail when it is not. A true Code 0 has a usable range from about 60 true to 90* true. That's it. Above that you should be using a jib. Period.

A...

Re: Volvo Ocean Race direct hit on the reef 2014 by race boat.

Yes they were going forward, at 15-19 kts of boat speed. The canting keel is missing the bulb! and you can tell the carbon laminate is "un damaged" from a couple photos on the internet? Both rudders...

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

My mainsheet setup is the same as the factor 4:1 with a 2:1 traveler. No reason to change it for me. I did increase the backstay purchase to 24:1 and run it up to the traveler. Works great while...

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

Christian Hess, you are correct, the older boats are stronger than the newer ones. The photos on the Skedaddle site are a very good reference but the site does run slow. The reinforcements at the...

Re: Volvo Ocean Race weather Tracker 2014

PICLARKE, there is plenty of video of the actual crash, discussions, and even interviews with crew members, the skipper, and a statement from the navigator himself on Sailing Anarchy.

The video...

Re: Merit 25 sailors?

Hello, I'm also a Merit 25 sailor. Great boats. I've done a full bottom job, template the keel and rudder, long board, barrier coat, etc. I've also re-cored most of the deck, replaced the mast step,...

Re: Cracked Mast

datswite, you need to post a photo of the crack with a ruler/scale showing its relative length.

IMHO, put a sleeve on it from the outside. After the sleeve is m made, you can rivet it in place,...

Re: Really, $1000.00 for foulies?

90% or more of sailors never need anything more than light weight pants or a jacket with a hood that is semi water repellant.

The only thing I think of that is $1k is either HL's offshore ocean...

Re: training - offshore sailing

Look to do deliveries, start with short overnights and if you like it move onto multi day passages. Lots of people looking for free help. Some may even pay for your plane ticket.

Re: Vang mechanical advantage

on a 30 footer you'll need at least 6:1 and 8:1 would be better. If the boom kicker is sized right, there shouldn't be much difference in load. However, I think the 800 model is too stiff for your...
