Re: Maintenance checklists

Do you have an actual list that schedules maintenance? I'm guessing most don't, which is fair. Homes are not boats but when I owned my home the checklist was seasonally. Make sure the caulking around...

Re: Maintenance checklists

Well, I'll be a liveaboard when I buy until I leave, then liveaboard when I'm 'done'. Sounds like an actual checklist by the hour/day/week/month/year assumes more than the real world can deliver.

Re: Maintenance checklists

Do you have an actual checklist you use, or is it habit by now?

$10,000 a year ... that's $200 a week. In maintenance and upgrades?

Maintenance checklists

I've found a few maintenance checklists online and these make sense, though they seem built around seasonal sailing. They don't assume someone is living aboard or cruising.

Do liveaboards and...

Re: Electric guitars aboard in the tropics

I guess you could if there's an amp attached. I gave my son a VOX AC30 amp. It can fit in your pocket and plugs into the guitar. From there you plug in a headphone and you're good to go. He's even...

Re: Electric guitars aboard in the tropics

Nice. A good friend of mine lives up there. He misses the sun. Private message if you want to hook up with someone who regularly sails and I'll introduce you guys.

Re: Electric guitars aboard in the tropics

Yeah, I'm guessing there is more of an issue with the amp than with the guitar. As it stands guitar strings don't last long here anyway. I don't even see any use for the amp while aboard most days,...

Re: Electric guitars aboard in the tropics

Electric guitars don't have to be played loud. They work quite well pumped through headphones or tablets with headphones. I know - my son plays his that way well into the wee hours and I'm unaware of...

Electric guitars aboard in the tropics

Anyone have experience with electric guitars aboard in the tropics? Outside of keeping the guitar and amp out of the water is there anything to think about with regards to brand/model, wood, etc. ?

Re: Sailing a technological breakthrough?

SkySails GmbH (http://www.skysails.info/english/skysails-marine/skysails-propulsion-for-cargo-ships/) has introduced a 'sail' they call a towing kite. This is in addition to their engines and has...

Re: 16 Months at adrift at Sea

I wonder who originally said it was 16 or 13 months? I'm not sure you could reasonably track time accurately being alone in a boat after several months. I suppose you could scratch a line in a piece...

Re: Two sailors rescued in Puget Sound

I treated someone with hypothermia on an early spring backpacking trip. He slipped on a snow bank and ended up in a deep puddle of melted snow water.

We pitched a tent in the sun, rolled out a...

I sink in the ocean, and still alive ;-)

Two years ago we rented a small boat with a captain to take us to some places on a reef south of the Grand Bahama. Our snorkeling gear includes a...

Re: Phones Apps

I would opt for an iPad for a few reasons:

Superior build quality
Damage resistant
Easier on the eyes
More forgiving UI
Solid user/refurbished market
AppleCare Plus

Re: Would you rather own a sailboat or a RV?

Well, by remote - in this case - you mean a paved road. Or a very well maintained dirt or gravel road. Neither of those mean remote.

On a related note the most 'remote' one can get in the...

I would consider a durable power of attorney. I believe these are null and void if the person dies, but otherwise may help grant decisions on shared property. I would suppose, in the end, nothing can...

Re: Need answer to something I've always Wondered About

I've read a half meter is the maximum length - so nothing deeper than two feet. It has to do with the water pressure and CO2 in snorkel. You cannot exhale with enough force to blow the CO2 out before...
