Re: I can't heave to

Do you have a working jib or a large genoa? Sounds like the foresail is overpowering the main.

Re: The two happiest days

Between orange and avocado green, I'd definitely take the orange :laugher

Congrats on the sale Paul, when do you reveal the new boat?

Just another old tub destined to become a derelict liveaboard, eh Paul?

Re: Teak Deck Replacement with Nonskid

Wow, do those pics bring back memories (nightmares?). Good luck with the project, you'll be justifiably proud when finished, and you'll never have to worry about a wet, rotten core.

Our deck...

Re: Forces on a dockline while docking....

40+' sailboat, full throttle in forward, 40 knot tailwind, one line coming tight on a cleat = something is going to give. Unless it's a perfectly straight, unobstructed path from the deck to the...

Re: My last little bit of planning

Your handheld VHF isn't going to give you reliable coverage in a lot of places so you won't have current weather reports. Any way to install a fixed radio with antenna on top of the mast? Wouldn't...

Re: Teak Deck Replacement with Nonskid

Goodonya for starting this daunting task! Never having to worry about a rotten core, and the tremendous job/expense that entails, makes the work removing the teak and glassing over seem minor (when...

Re: Tying stern-to to shore

Flying- looking like a complete moron is required your first few times :-)) Gives the rest of us something to watch. The only thing I would add to Ray's excellent explanation would be to pull...

Re: PSC 37 running backstays...

Brion Toss convinced me to do away with the SS and replace with Amsteel. It is spliced to line and we use the off side winches, the old fiddle blocks never worked very well.

Re: Taking a PowerBoater on a Cruise...

I started cringing when I read the title of the thread. There aren't many powerboaters that convert well to sailing, some, but not many. Glad he snapped out of it and didn't ruin the trip for you,...

Nice video! Wonder how long the main will last plastered up against the shroud like that?

Re: BC waters engineless?

Guess I missed the "negative" part of this thread. The OP asked for information and he got some from some very experienced sailors in this area. Can it be done? Of course. How long would a...

Re: 2gm 13 Yanmar external oil line "HELP"!!

We had to remove the starter on a 3GM if I remember correctly. The most difficult part was holding all the crush washers in place while holding the line and fiddling with the bolts. It was a two...

Re: Otter problem, help!

As if the otters weren't enough of a PITA, they leave the heads and guts of the fish they eat, and most of the legs of the crabs, on the docks. The gulls, herons, and eagles grab them and fly up...

Re: Go-To boat cleaner

I second the Imar (per Mainesails rec). Doesn't remove the wax (+) but also doesn't remove the black streaks (-). Since I wax once a year anyway I might switch to one of the recommendations above...

Re: Bottom Damage by Pressure Washer

I can't even imagine why a boatyard would have a 0 degree nozzle for their pressure washer. Most either use a rotating head multi jet nozzle or a fan. Even with 5000 psi I think you would have to...

Re: Don't sand first!

I've used a heat gun to soften the Cetol up prior to using the scraper, works great. Might not need the heat in a warm climate.

Re: That can't be good..... right?

Med- I'd drill a small hole in the bottom of the keel directly under the hinge to see if more water comes out. If it does then there must be a void in that area. You might be able to figure it out...

Re: Bottom Damage by Pressure Washer

If there were a lot of blisters under the bottom paint I could see an aggressive pressure washing cutting into them. Surveyor (independent) would be in order at this point.

Re: Perkins 4.108M DIY Rebuild -- A Narrative

Some of the engines we rebuilt in my business had the "broken" rods/caps, I always assumed it was so they could only be put together one way but don't really know. Might have been Perkins, or maybe...

We have a pair of Ospreys that build a nest in a big fir tree on the upper island every year, we spend quite a bit of time watching them with binocs from a clearing not far away. They usually need...

Re: Chain Plate Pin Hole Size

I think I went 1/32" over when we made ours, I figured the more metal to metal contact between the pin and the plate the better.

Re: Twin Keel sailboat?

Important historical note: I learned to sail on a twin keel Vivacity 20 :-)) I think Dad figured (correctly) that I'd run aground in it. Try as I might, I couldn't break that boat, lots of fun.
