Re: 2014 Sailing Season

Hey, I saw you there in Shaw Bay. I was the scruffy green sloop anchored in between the catboat-like sailboat and the tugboat cruiser, just south of you. It was great sailing there on Saturday, but...

Re: 2014 Sailing Season

I just got back last night from a 2-week sail, basically from the Severn river, MD to Hopewell, VA, and back: route here (http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm#). I...

Re: 2013/2014 Maintenance Season

Thanks, jimgo, but I think we're talking about two different things. My mast has no tabernacle, so it doesn't pivot on its own. The Catalina 27 video shows what I'd have to do - first lift the mast...

Re: 2013/2014 Maintenance Season

The webbing mast ladder worked just fine - I had a bosun's chair with plenty of pockets, and even if I were not supported by the bosun's chair, you can secure yourself to the mast. It was plenty...

Re: 2013/2014 Maintenance Season

I had a friend help me climb the mast on Saturday - I climbed a homemade mast climbing thing (like this (http://www.captfklanier.com/images/mastmatladder1.JPG)), and he hauled on a halyard attached...

Re: The hrad to raed thraed

This is nothing new; most sailnetters seem to use this cloaking device already. How many posts are there about rouge waves, Marlborough Inlet (NC), hoving to, putting apostrophes where none are...

Re: Right Sailboat for Severn River??

Jeff H - yeah, sorry about the typo, I meant anything over 60'6"...

Seriously, I rarely see any of the larger boats near me leave the dock more than a few times a year, unless they do most of...

Re: How to run aground properly

Holy crap! The wind went from 8/14 SW to 47/63 NNW in the span of 12 minutes (http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=chyv2) last night at Cape Henry, and it had been blowing from the...

Re: The run aground poll

I think the poll is too judgemental, too black & white. What it should say is,

When you ran aground, why did it happen:

asleep?
drunk?
showing off?
bad/wrong/no charts?
...

Re: Right Sailboat for Severn River??

Oops, sorry, I meant to say "boats over 30'6"..."

As someone else alluded to, larger boats moored up the Severn, from what I've seen, tend to motor all the way to Annapolis and then sail on the...

Re: Right Sailboat for Severn River??

Scratchee's comments are right on - you can actually have better sailing on the river because on days when it's rough on the bay, you can get nearly flat water on Round Bay and then pull up to a lee...

Re: 2013/2014 Maintenance Season

There should be an injunction issued against me doing any sort of carpentry. I thought I'd be industrious and make myself some bookshelves out of mahogany and marine plywood I got for $1 from...

Re: crew wanted for solo cruise - May 2014

Thank you - I was wondering when I'd finally get a considered and helpful response from someone. Better yet, something like that inflatable copilot in the movie Airplane would work even better,...

crew wanted for solo cruise - May 2014

Here's the plan - I've got nearly a month of vacation days to use up, and I want to spend a good part of that on my boat. I'd like to make another trip down the Chesapeake and either head down the...

Re: Annapolis - Atlantic early June

Sorry, but this trip already happened. See post #19.
I'm going on a similar trip in May this year, but I doubt I'll take crew.

Re: 2014 Sailing Season

I'm putting my boat on dry land until 2015. I don't think this winter is going to end. I wonder if the community college has any classes on how to raise musk oxen or caribou.

Re: 2014 Sailing Season

Got out today for a sail with a buddy on the Severn to the route 50 bridge and back. Fluky fluky winds (0-20+?) and beautiful beautiful temperature. We actually dodged some ice floes on the way out...

Re: Best Homes w/Slip in the Chesapeake Bay Area

Then there must be some exceptions to the rule or certain officials are more flexible than others, because a number of houses have gone up near us that don't seem to follow these codes. Nearly all...

Re: 2014 Sailing Season

I managed to get out for a quick sail on Monday afternoon - 'twas quite nice with temperatures in the 50s and the wind between 10 and 15, I would guess.

It seems most days this last month or so...

Re: Best Homes w/Slip in the Chesapeake Bay Area

Ditto what Bubblehead said. I live 200 yards from our community pier and beach and pay $600/year for my slip. My house cost $235,000 - it was originally a summer cottage built in the 1940s and is...

Re: 2013/2014 Maintenance Season

Bubblehead,

I'd be glad to meet you sometime.

I was only half-kidding about the rococo thing; my daughter and I were at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore last week and it was inspiring. At...
