Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

A friend from the FAA says she encountered the term, "configuration drift" in a technical meeting there! Gave her, and me, quite a chuckle :-)

Re: Dueling Charging Systems; Solar, Engine, Battery Charger

Coupla folks here continue to mix up state-of-charge (SOC) with battery capacity, despite repeated attempts by MaineSail to clarify. These are not the same thing at all.

The specific gravity of...

Re: Wiring gauges in series? OK??

Sorry, but the above posts by the OP scare me to death!

Just the phrase, "substitute a voltmeter for an ammeter" is enough to indicate you have no grasp of even the basic concepts of DC circuits....

Re: Balmar programming

Don't sweat it. Those three Lifeline AGMs can take an initial charge of almost 400 amps when 50% discharged, or more like 1800 amps if discharged to 25% or so!! Quite enough to give your paltry...

Re: Fortress Anchor--Does anyone set it to the 45 degree mud angle?

I agree with that. The Fortress FX-37 is my primary anchor when in the Chesapeake Bay area, with a Danforth HT as backup.

When I leave the Chesapeake, I put my 45lb genuine CQR on the bow; it's...

Re: Shared SSB/WeatherFax Antenna

There are several which have that capability, BUT....

IMHO (and I'm a very experienced radio guy) its a very bad idea to use a splitter. Why risk damage to your SSB and/or WEFAX receiver?

You...

Re: ACR Choice & Bank Size

Yes, by all means run ALL charging sources -- alternator, battery charger, solar panels, etc. -- direct to the house batteries, with appropriate fusing.

Re: Ship-to-Shore radio (handheld or wired)

Two things:

1. The RANGE of a VHF radio, indeed, normally is line-of-sight -- plus a bit, maybe 20% or so due to "bending". The higher the antenna, the greater the range.

Many VHF handhelds...

Re: Battery charge vs. voltage under load

Yep. That would tend to indicate that your 6-year old batteries have lost considerable capacity.

Only way to be sure is to first make sure the battery state-of-charge is 100%, then do a complete...

Following is from Sally aboard Seaquel, anchored this morning off Boqueron PR. It explains the emergency and the head injury, as well as the trip to PR afterwards.

Dear Friends,
The short...

Re: s/v Seaquel Rescue.

Seaquel bypassed Mayaguez last nite and continued to Boqueron where they anchored just after 2AM.

Don't know the full story yet, but no doubt it will come out in a day or two.

Update 8:50PM Thursday. Sally, not Sandy, is a General Class licensee (KA3RUJ) and a friend. Andy, her husband and captain, is also a licensed General Class amateur (KC4VOA). They both DO know...

Re: 125/250v shorepower question

Exactly!

Don't know where this 30A business came from, unless the responders above were thinking about a splitter. These are in common use and have 30A connectors on each "leg", but they depend...

Re: Battery Assistance

You really need to rethink this, and think entire battery & charging systems, not just the batteries themselves.

It is folly IMHO to try to take shortcuts and "save" one or more batteries from...

Yeah, you can. But why not take the opportunity to renew the cable and make sure it's the proper size to get the most out of your charging setup?

Re: Charging Woes

Yes....a fuse or breaker between the regulator and the batteries.

You can effectively turn off solar panels without doing damage to them (unlike an alternator). Thus, the sequence when...

Re: Charging Woes

Those appear to be 10A breakers to cut the solar panels output before the regulator. This is good practice; there should be a way to cut off the panels BEFORE the regulator, as well as a way to cut...

Re: Does everything need to be on a switch?

No, it doesn't have to be on a switch, though that is often convenient.

However, it does have to be on a fuse or breaker, preferably 15A.

Piggybacking on other circuits with their own 15A...

Re: How to charge a SEALED lead acid battery?

At 13.7VDC you're likely not getting a full charge.

The trick with ANY battery, sealed or not, is to charge and float at the recommended voltages.

For gelled batteries, this is often 14.2VDC...

Re: How to charge a SEALED lead acid battery?

Yes, there are small solar controllers which would do the trick for you. They can be set for type of battery.

Genasun makes a line of such products...they are popular and well made. The little...
