Re: Cockpit seats

We have our seat cushions plus a small thermarest inflatable pillow for our backs. The thermarest doubles as our pillow for sleeping. We've looked at "seats" but decided they take up too much room....

Re: 10 weeks to splash - will it ever get here?

One thing is certain. I will NEVER sail around the arctic. I told Mr. Cthoops that when we cast off the lines (only 6 more winters!), we're sticking with warm climates. I want to get to the point...

10 weeks to splash - will it ever get here?

We have ten weeks to go until Pegu Club is back in the water. Rather than get grumpy over the latest snowfall, I decided to break out our new-to-us GoPro and get some practice with it. Hopefully...

Re: Winter cover fails

So far our tarp is holding up well (knock wood). We had to make an adjustment to the bow area because it was catching some wind, but since then it's been fine. No snow accumulation on it, either. ...

Welcome, sparkynacho. Nice to see a fellow CT resident.

Congrats on the boat!

Re: Boot Key Harbor question.

I wouldn't even hesitate to escape the winters if I were in your position. This simply blows. Life is too short to spend several months a year freezing my ass off and waiting for warm weather.

Re: Repairing the luff on our jib

Rich,

Thank you so much for taking the time to detail all of this. I truly appreciate it. I have a regular 'dressmakers' machine, but am planning to get a Sailrite at some point in the future.

Re: Repairing the luff on our jib

Thanks for the sailmaker suggestion. I hadn't thought of that. I do have a sewing machine though, and might want to give this a try myself. Any DIY suggestions?

Repairing the luff on our jib

We had trouble raising the jib in our roller furler last season because we didn't think to put SailKote in the slot before the mast was stepped. At the end of the season when we took the sail down,...

Re: Just Go!

I've really gotten a lot out of this thread. Having read countless threads debating whether XXX is enough to go (whether XXX is the boat, money, equipment, etc.), for some reason this one struck a...

Re: My new dinghy, thank you

I agree. We bought a Watertender at the beginning of last season and didn't paint because we read that the paint wouldn't stick to it. Well, paint may not have, but an absolutely disgusting amount of...

Re: Greatest fear?

Our outboard has been a bit finicky at times, so I never fully trust it (and likely never will). So currently my biggest fear is that it will crap out at the worst possible time (because that's...

Re: What is the most idiotic mistake you have made on a boat?

When we took ASA 101 the course came with a substantial number of practice hours on the boat. We were feeling pretty good about ourselves one day when we were out practicing. We saw a single white...

Re: Whats your best bit of kit??

Two thumbs up for our Nature's Head.

We had used a portapotti for almost two seasons, including our two week "cruise" during our first season. Ten days before our two week trip this past season,...

Re: Cleating off Furling line?

Well I'm glad I read this thread. We'll cleat off the line from now on.

Thanks.

Re: Cleating off Furling line?

Is this something that everyone does? We just finished our second season with our Bristol 24 and we've never cleated off the furling line at the end of the day. We furl the jib with a few extra...

Re: Would you work 1 additional year to go from $50k to $150k boat

If I was going to be happy with the boat that I could buy without working the extra year (knowing that every boat is a compromise), I would definitely just leave. None of us have any idea how long...

Rebel Heart Lawsuit Dismissed

Looks like the Rebel Heart lawsuit was dismissed for lack of jurisdiction. Their attorney claims it will be refiled in Florida. Give me a break.

Re: Never been in a slip

We are in the same "boat" so to speak in that we've owned our boat for two seasons, we're on a mooring, and we've only been to the T-dock a few times each season to get more water (we have a Nature's...

Re: Small cooler for weekending

It doesn't have wheels, and it is heavy, but our Yeti cooler is indestructible and keeps ice better than any other cooler we've owned. It's expensive, but for us it was definitely worth it.

Re: I had to cut away my anchor :(

We have something that looks like this on our Bristol 24. The anchor hasn't fallen off yet (nor have we used it), but the PO had a bungee around it (presumably for added security) which we've kept on...

Re: boat for tall sailor

Jon,

Do you feel that interior headroom is overrated for a long-term cruising sailboat? I'm curious because my husband is 6'4" and we have plans upon retirement to become full-time cruisers. ...

Re: Bermuda jumping off point

Different strokes, I guess. We absolutely love Bermuda - we've been there three times for a land vacation. The people, the beauty, the "feel" of it is simply wonderful. When we dream about our future...

Re: Air Head Composting Toilet or Similar Mfg.

I wouldn't worry about the longer hose. We installed a Nature's Head a few weeks ago and vented to the pump out. In our case, between the twists and turns, it was almost 24 feet of hose. The air is...

Re: $3000/mo cruising budget

I wasn't trying to make a distinction between a cruising budget and a retirement liveaboard budget. For us, retirement will mean full time cruising but we'll return to land when we're ready, not...
