Re: Hurricane Sandy: How did you do?
It's interesting that the breach occurred right at where the bridge from the mainland comes over. I wonder if that's a coincidence, or if the pilings from the bridge somehow created a weak point in...

Re: Hurricane Sandy: How did you do?
Wow. I guess the bridge blocked the wind a bit, considering its direction.
If I didn't know there was a storm I wouldn't have been able to tell from my boat. The cover for my compass blew into...

Re: Hurricane Sandy: How did you do?
I stayed in my slip at White Rocks in Pasadena, MD, with doubled lines and as much slack as I could put in them and still keep her between the pilings. After the storm the marina put out an email...

Re: Will Hurricane Sandy Affect You?
I'm at White Rocks in Pasadena, MD. Winds are supposed to be out of the NE-NW for us with a 1-2 ft. surge in the Middle and Upper Chesapeake, as the NWS says. I moved my boat five years ago from...

Just for perspective, let's revisit the official NWS bulletin for Katrina. When I read this back in the day my blood ran cold:

Re: Team Oracle Boat Capsizes
These international competitions in million-dollar boats with high tech gear bore me. What these races should do is put the teams in identical production boats, give 'em a day to get acquainted with...

Let there be light(s)!
On Wednesday I got the wires tucked away in their channels, outlet installed, connections made, and main switches flipped to ON.
No sparks, smoke or explosions, just lovely green LEDs softly...

Re: Redoing shore power correctly
It's interesting that connecting the AC ground to the DC common bus is an ABYC requirement, yet Blue Sea doesn't mention or show it on the schematic.
Galvanic isolators are referred to as being...

What the instructions from Blue Seas didn't say
Namely, any mention of grounding the main AC panel to the common DC ground, i.e., the engine block. The schematic clearly shows only the ground from the AC source and then the individual grounds...

Re: Atomic 4 Shakes the Boat
Atomic 4s are some notoriously smooth-running engines. If you're getting vibration on that scale it's something else than the engine.

Re: Redoing shore power correctly
In this case it would introduce one extra connection. I wouldn't use 14 awg wire, I'd use the 10 awg that I used for the main run. But it sure would be a lot easier to make the connection.
The...

Re: Redoing shore power correctly
That's what I need: a pigtail. I can join the three grounds to a screw in the back of the junction box. Luckily I bought a nice big one (4" x 4" x 4"), so there's plenty of room inside.
Thanks...

Re: Redoing shore power correctly
The real problem is the lack of space around the screw. I wish I'd taken a picture of the back side of the unit, but you can get an idea from the front side:

Now this makes no sense
I'm installing the Blue Seas part 8077 Main breaker, with the "safety ground screw on panel back." I'm doing this because the run to the distribution panel is over ten feet, so I got a utility box...

Haven't blow up yet!
Went to the boat this weekend and my Blue Sea main+6 panel wasn't in yet, so I picked up the main breaker to put in between the shore power plug and where the panel will be (it's about a 15 foot...

I was planning on using the crimped terminals with the marine wire. Good to see a validation of that idea.
Is the purpose of the stranded, tinned wire for flexibility (the stranding) and...

Re: Redoing shore power correctly
OK, so sum up the responses so far:
1) get the 6-switch panel with the MAIN and branch switches to get the proper 15A breakers on the runs.
2) don't sweat marine receptacles below deck
3)...

Redoing shore power correctly
I'm finally getting around to redoing my shore power setup on my Newport 28; the PO had household 12/2 Romex going directly to a household GFCI outlet, which I imagine is less than optimal.

Re: taking kids out in summer
Your instructor recommends September because it's cooler and the winds are better. Wait for a day that's not too hot and has winds around 7-10 kt and voila -- September in July!

Is it far-fetched to think that if you've been five-tooted twice in five minutes, someone from the tooter might want to talk with you?
