Re: Venture 17 restoration

Well at least you won't see another boat with the same name.

Re: Venture 17 restoration

Awesome! Looks sharp. I miss that boat. I don't use my 21 nearly as much as I used that 17. I think you have to be a member here for a certain amount of time or make so many posts before you can...

Re: Classifieds revamp please

I've been here since 2009 and have 354 posts. I still can't find the post button! I just sawed up a parts boat and have some junk to unload.

Edit: I have very high quality boat parts to "rehome"

Re: Okay it's a longshot... Anyone want to sell their Rhodes 22?

No I never did. A year ago I bought a Venture 21. A 1976 model that appears to have never been used, but sat in the sun ever since. Nobody ever even put a compass on it. New teak, wiring, and a...

Re: Sailing on network TV! "Chasing Shackleton" on tonight!

Regarding the inside scenes / not being tossed about:

If I were in the cabin of a 22' open boat (itself a contradiction) being tossed about on the Southern Ocean, and only allowed to sleep for 3...

Re: Sailing on network TV! "Chasing Shackleton" on tonight!

I thought it was fake too. The guy with the icky feet calmly said "I'm very infuriated with you right now." I figured nobody that upset would speak so softly. Then I realized he is British. So it...

Re: Sailing on network TV! "Chasing Shackleton" on tonight!

Did ya all see the second episode yet? Lots of sailing. They set out for the mountain climbing at the end. I guess the third episode will be mountaineering.

Re: Best Homes w/Slip in the Chesapeake Bay Area

How reasonable can someone buy waterfront property within two hours of the PA line? Navigable water. (doesn't need to be deep, but no low bridges downstream) Livable house. Dock, or at least...

Re: Sailing on network TV! "Chasing Shackleton" on tonight!

Update: The PBS App claims Episode 1 will be available until January 2024. So you have a decade to watch it. No hurry. :) Guess I can put my VCR back in storage. Or watch my wedding video. ...

Re: Sailing on network TV! "Chasing Shackleton" on tonight!

I dug it out just for this. Haven't used it in a decade. It did a nice job actually. Chasing Shackleton and their 1916 boat ain't got nothin' on me and my 1997 VCR!

Had I known it would be on...

Re: Sailing on network TV! "Chasing Shackleton" on tonight!

I was thinking the same thing. The chase boat has sails. And heat, room to change clothes under roof, and a better menu. But I'd still like the experience of the little boat using old equipment. ...

Re: Books on the sailboat - a good idea?

I was a big proponent of actual paper books until I got a Nook. The basic model (NOT LCD screen) is as easy to read as paper and the backlight is better than any reading light. I have never paid for...

Re: The most secluded remote boating spots in the U.S.

You looking for "navigable water" to sail TO, or can you trailer? Like the MacGregor ads say - I can get to my favorite sailing spots at 55mph. Mountain lakes on a weekday off season?

Re: Step off the cliff and a net will appear

Shut up and go already! (Hoping that's the motivation you seek)
:)

You've already put more thought into this than many people who have done what you want to do and lived through it.

Re: Sailing on network TV! "Chasing Shackleton" on tonight!

Kudos to PBS for NOT playing up the reality show aspect. There really are 6 guys on 22 foot boat making an 800 mile trip in the southern ocean using 1916 nav equipment and clothing. Unless they're...

Re: Sailing on network TV! "Chasing Shackleton" on tonight!

I was wrong - part 2 is not on tonight. Part 1 was on again at 3AM. Part 2 is next week. But thanks to Captainmeme's link I won't have to set my VCR. I'll watch it from my iPad when I have time....

Sailing on network TV! "Chasing Shackleton" on tonight!

I recorded part 1 of the 3 part series last night. Watching it now. I'm quite familiar with the story but haven't seen this yet. They re-enact his voyage in the Antarctic in a 22 foot sailboat...

Re: 2014 Sailing Season

Thanks for the suggestions. If I launch at Owens we'll have to have a drink, Gary!

Re: 2014 Sailing Season

I'd like to try some new launches this year. Maybe Havre de Grace? Or the ramp near Inner Harbor? Those ramps at Sandy Point are SO nice for single-handed launching though.

Re: Chapman's 67th Edition

What sort of stuff would change? Maybe some laws that apply to commercial captains? I sail "navigable waters" a handful of times a year at best. Do I need the newest version? I got the 46th from...

Re: What would you do? Caught off guard by storm on the Chesapeake

I'm really enjoying this excellent discussion. I'm sure lots of novice lurkers are too. I do have a lazarrette latch meant for a pad lock, but as my boat lives in my garage, I don't have a lock on...

Re: What would you do? Caught off guard by storm on the Chesapeake

This is all really good stuff! You're right, my story is fiction only because it hasn't happened to me YET. I've been caught off guard on a motorcycle many times and I have a good plan for that. ...

Question What would you do? Caught off guard by storm on the Chesapeake

Seeking wisdom from Old Salts. What follows is a scenario that could easily happen. I start the story and you finish it.

I'm returning from an enjoyable night onboard my mid-70's 21 foot...

Re: 3.5 HP outboard for Venture 21? (vs. 8HP)

Good point Chuck. I should also mention the 3.5 has 12 hours on it and the Nissan, while it runs great, is a Craigslist find of unknown history.

I've never really had to scramble to avoid bad...

3.5 HP outboard for Venture 21? (vs. 8HP)

My V21 came without a motor and I sold my 2HP Honda with my V17. I got an 8HP Nissan long (2 stroke) for the V21 but haven't tried it on that boat yet.

On the local lakes I'd be fine with an...
