Re: Prop size for 4-107

I've been using a hard bottom paint such as tridad on my max prop for over 20 years with pretty good results. However, it's important to prep the prop properly before application. Besides removing...

Re: Bicycling as sailing

I'm in the mountains of North Carolina away from the boat so over the last year have taken up bike riding. It really is surprising how much benefit you get from drafting others as you ride.

Re: Prop size for 4-107

I have the 4-108 on a Tayana 37, which is smaller than your Gulfstar but probably a bigger displacement. It came with the 17x11 3 blade, however from day one I switched over to the 17 inch max prop....

Re: Antifreeze in water line

I didn't make myself very clear apparently. It's not about the expansion that I was talking about, but rather the water possibly turning racid with time. The addition of antifreeze just may...

Re: Antifreeze in water line

Chuck,

I'm not sure if I can get the last drop of water out of my tanks around the baffles and all so that is the reason for putting something in them. Did your antifreeze turn rancid?

Re: Antifreeze in water line

It's my understanding that there is basically two types of this pink non toxic antifreeze. One contains some alcohol and is cheaper than the other type containing no alcohol. The cheaper stuff may...

Re: Dry bilges

I always thought that the majority of the water came in through the stuffing box until this last year when the boat was on the hard and I saw how much water was coming down that keel steped mast. I...

Re: Using Bottom Paint on Brass Propeller

What Maine says is right. For that reason I make sure that I prep the prop with underwater metal primer prior to any coating of Cu bottom paint. I've used such a system for over 20 years on my...

Re: waxed gelcoat?

I'm going to be making some gelcoat repairs myself soon and have asked the same question about using multiply layers. The latest and greatest info out of Jamestown Distributors indicates that I can...

Re: Bob Perry's take on Wolfenzee's dream boat

Very interesting thread. Thanks. As I was reading through the discussions and seeing Bob's comment about all boat are designed to sail flat, my first thought was a twin keel. I have a friend who...

Re: Hat recommendations

I've been using a large brim baseball style cap with a skirt built in to protect the neck and ears. A variety of hats can be found on Coolibar: Sun Protective Clothing - Coolibar...

Re: Ever been injured on your boat? Just happened to me.

I am now always careful to step from the dock to the boat rather than making a hurried jump. Always landed on the boat however, one time I twisted my ankle. Thought it was no big deal and continued...

Re: Don't sand first!

I found that cetol will hold up best to UV if the clear gloss is applied over the original 3 coats of natural. At first I reasoned that going without the gloss would be best since the way I...

Re: Bottom Damage by Pressure Washer

Even with the proper nozzel and pressure, a careless worker can do damage to the hull. For example, try putting that nozzel and inch away from the hull a leave it there and see what happens. It...

Re: GPS and other displays, pedestal mount or other?

Speaking of compass errors....I did install a Furuno chartplotter/radar display at the helm several years ago and the location was such that it was closer to the compass than recommended. However...

Re: Thougts on which is better topside paint...

Have you considered spraying gel? I've got some small dimples in the gel that needs to be sanded down and wet sanding does not eliminate them so it's either paint or gel. No experience yet ...

I also received confirmation today that the order shipped. Ended up with the Micron Extra bottom paint at $180 per gallon after the rebate plus getting 2000e primer at $80 a gallon. Those prices...

Re: Perkins 4.108M DIY Rebuild -- A Narrative

I've cleaned that tube stack maybe three times over the 28 years(1985 Perkins 4-108). I don't remember having removed it from the rear of the engine, but rather from the front. Once removed I put...

Interesting that you mentioned the "bumbs" showing through the gelkote. My boat (a Tayana 37 like yours) is a 1985 vintage and has for the past several years have shown small dimples or...

I too like Defender, but it still pays to check around since sometimes their prices can be beat. I always found WM to be high priced and even their sale items may be found cheaper elsewhere. Years...
