Re: How to finance yourself while cruising fulltime?

Long Gold, short EUR, short JPY, tricky with S&P
The most important part is to have your soul-mate with you on-board full-time :)
If you have that - everything is possible!
Good luck!

Re: Sailing "big boats"

Based on my unbiased experience (since I don't own a boat) I found the optimal combination of comfort, space, complexity and cost for a couple or a small group being 46'-52'. Assuming that O&M costs...

Re: Which Smartphone for Sailing

This is an interesting discussion for me as I am in the same process of looking for a best smartphone/tablet to be used on a boat. If I am not mistaken the GPS feature works as part of the...

Re: Over Due Yacht

It is difficult to argue about some legal/practical matters over a tragic and sad event, but not sure how US DoS and USCG could have a jurisdiction in international waters especially half way around...

Re: Beyond Desolation at last

Thanks for sharing, you guys had a fantastic trip! I was around Sonora Island on salmon fishing in early August and noticed that apart from the fantastic weather, that there was almost no wind (other...

Re: Lost At Sea - 1 dead in the Southern Ocean

Well, that's the whole point, to put all risks into perspective. Crusing the ocean with a 50-foot yacht is different level of risk (and likelihood of surviving) that taking it on with a kayak.

Re: Lost At Sea - 1 dead in the Southern Ocean

Bingo!

Lesson #1: How about not going into one potential tragedy when the odds of not making it alive are extremely high.

Lesson #2: Listen to your gut feeling. Everybody that was interviewed...

Re: Lost At Sea - 1 dead in the Southern Ocean

I simply thought he was in a real boat by reading the thread title (berth, head), not a kayak. I should have been more explicit. It didn't apply to his 'boating/kayaking' skills which obviously he...

Re: Lost At Sea - 1 dead in the Southern Ocean

Not sure what I said in order to be banned. It is a very simple downside risk analysis. Kayak does not offer any protection to a human being on one of the most inhospitable oceans outside its natural...

Re: Lost At Sea - 1 dead in the Southern Ocean

A sad story it is indeed. I first thought it is a real boater but when I figured out he went in a kayak, I couldn't believe it. It is like trying to climb Everest in flip-flops and a t-shirt.

Re: Plan of Attack in BVI, Island Hopping

There is not too much to add to what others have already said, but here is my experience:

- was there two times chartering with Sunsail and Moorings (same base). I think Anegada is generally out...

Re: Croatia and VAT

Thanks Zanshin
I am not a tax expert but I am wondering what are the advantages of that vs having your boat registered in the Caymans, BVI or similar jurisdiction. I agree on the initial cost...

Cool Re: Croatia and VAT

Does it mean that you have to buy the boat in Croatia? What if you buy it elsewhere in the EU?

This is maybe a nice move from them, but everything else may be more expensive so I think it is not...

Re: Newbie in Croatia

Hi there
Excellent lifestyle decision, but I would not do singlehandedly. I am sure there won't be any lack of willing crew to take on board for some help and company. I was sailing in Croatia for...
