Re: PFD Flotation vs Body Weight

Typically Type III PFD's have about 14 pounds of buoyancy. They don't have nearly the buoyancy of modern inflatables. Type III PFD provide better insulation -- particularly, in the boat -- but...

Re: 12 volt hifi numpty needs MP 3 help

My crew ripped my cd collection to a usb drive for me. No CD's to store. No moving parts. The audio quality may not be tops but I'm old enough that I can't hear the highs any longer and the...

Re: Anybody ever go too big?

My wife insists on being able to single-hand any boat we cruise, which I believe is reasonable. Therefore, our limit is not what I can handle but what she can handle. She thinks that she can handle...

Re: To stop pitching, no not horseshoes.

Good idea; wrong location. The 1,000# of stones needs to be at the head of the mast.

Re: small boat BVI

I've enjoyed charters in the VI aboard a 31' and 32' sloops. I concur that you don't need anything bigger.

Re: Martinique: Sail North or South?

The response to a recent inquiry regarding Dominica was overwhelmingly positive by those who have cruised there. Perhaps you should search the thread. When my wife and I cruised the Saintes and...

Re: Engine diagnosis Yanmar 7.5 hp...

Congratulations on your progress. In response to two of your questions:
1. The triangular thing at the base of the furler is a "pre-feeder". When you are raising the sail you feed the luff tape...

Bowsprits and bobstays at a mooring

We're considering buying a new boat with a bobstay and bowsprit but we will keep the boat on a mooring and I'm concerned that during Sandy the boats with a bobstay and bowsprit broke away more...

Re: Tiller pilot ?

Additional plusses:
+ the TP will "learn" how to respond to sea state. In a few minutes its steering action becomes more refined. It'll steer a straighter course than you.

Re: Best Coastal Cruiser under 37 ft

Perhaps you should look at the J/112E when it's out this spring. The small jib and fractional rig should make it easy to depower. Rather than furling main sail -- ugh --, think Dutchman flaking on...

Re: How does the marine industry price?

The last time I read the West Marine annual report to stockholders their net profit was 3/4% on sales.

The pricing of West Marine private label goods is confounding. Some of their soft goods...

Re: In what order are parts of the boat most important?

You should have a good picture of the whole before starting to look at the parts. Do you have a clear sense of how you are going to use the boat? If so, the anticipated use will help identify...

I bought one Thistle for $4K and sold it four years later for $4,200. Because the class association restricts changes in the fifty year-old design, the older boats aren't made obsolete by newer...
