Re: Hull cleaning

Thanks for those (though I realize this is a really old post). Why did you put two zincs right next to each other at the base of the shaft rather than more evenly spaced? Also, were these all new...

Re: vibration from prop shaft

By chance were you going downwind? I also let my two-blade fixed prop spin per Yanmar, and noticed a vibration on Saturday while I was sailing downwind at about 8 knots SOG and 10 knots apparent...

Re: Where to get OpenCPN charts?

I'd be interested in knowing what version this is. I just downloaded, for the first time yesterday, OpenCPN 4.0. It looks like you can't just click on one region (say Eastern Pacific) and get all the...

Re: Freedom 29 question

Never heard of an F29. Might want to check the FreedomYachts.org page or give a call to Paul Dennis at Warren River Boat Works. He used to build Freedoms.

Re: Am I an SOB?

I can only hope there are SOBs like you and your wife out there when I pull the dock lines for good. I love hearing stories like this. It warms my heart.

Re: Wetsuit recommendations

Edd's biography sounds impressive, but don't know him and was diving North Florida caves at least 4 years before he learned to scuba dive.

Apologies to the OP for the thread drift :o

Re: Wetsuit recommendations

It is. Although one of the coldest cave dives I ever had was after an hour and a half in Indian Springs in a 6 mm wetsuit. I learned to dive dry after that ;)

Re: Wetsuit recommendations

You should base this on temperature, your tolerance to shivering, and how "water tight" the wetsuit is. You're always going to lose body heat, but those who stay warmer generally become less fatigued...

Re: What to take, toss, sell or store

Sounds exciting! If you two are doing this all of a sudden with just a few months to plan, that sounds a little daunting. I've been going through downsizing mode for about 6 years now and live on my...

Re: Any Solo Sailors?

This is like beating a dead horse, but here goes.

Deciding how to handle your own boat that makes sense for you is a personal preference and you have to figure out what works for you when there's...

Re: Thought there was something strange..

This reminds me about the time my son put his laptop next to the bulkhead containing the fluxgate compass and the AP would not hold a course for longer than about 5 seconds. After the 3rd time of 90...

Re: Thought there was something strange..

Same thing has happened to others going under the the new span of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. Maybe it has something to do with a different type of steal?

I don't trust my old AP right now...

Re: San Fran to Marina del Rey delivery

I did the trip north from San Diego to San Francisco in mid June with two other people on a 36' boat. Thought it was perfect with everyone taking 3-hour shifts, which allowed enough time to get...

Good info here: Resources | Singlehanded Sailing Society (http://sfbaysss.org/main/resources/), especially the links under Seminar Materials.

There's nothing more satisfying than figuring out by...

Re: San Fran to Marina del Rey delivery

Down wind is your friend, but I've done a handful of passages to Half Moon Bay and one to Monterey where I was mostly motoring because drifting was just too painful and would take too long. A...

Re: AIS phantom ship

Admittedly, I'm still a newbie about this stuff, but where AIS shines is not in crowded areas or even along coastal passages, but offshore and in the dead of night or when short-handed or when...

I think this is the answer. Coast Guard SAR helicopters are all over the bay these days.

Re: Freedom 30 - Worth a look?

Ahh, maybe the F30 is the F32 without the platform. Same as the F38, which is registered as a F36, but has the sugar scoop.

Re: Freedom 30 - Worth a look?

I have a 1988 Freedom 38. I don't know about the F30, but I am a little familiar with the F32, which is practically the same as the F38. The gunmount spinnaker is pretty cool though mine did not come...

Re: backing into a slip with single screw

I've always wondered if this was an East Coast versus West Coast thing. In the Chesapeake, when I first started to learn how to sail, it seemed as if 90% of the boats docked stern in. In San...

Re: backing into a slip with single screw

Couple of things that help me is that I make a 180 turn before putting it into reverse at the entrance to the fairway and then drive it in by standing at the helm facing backwards. In my boat (a 38'...

Re: New AIS Rule

Without having read the rule, this appears to be a good summary of it except that the compliance date is March 2, 2015 (not 2016, so take it with a grain of salt there could be other errors): US...
