Re: Cape Cod Canal

I think Onset is a great stop. (easy in, easy out and an excellent last restaurant and fuel before your long passage).Although just at the entrance, you could pick an early time to not be full...

Re: Sailing a winter sport?

We sail all year round out of the West River in the Chesapeake in our S&S 37. We have a portable propane heater lashed to the mast that keeps the below decks warm. No traffic, crisp and better air,...

Re: Low vs. high freeboard - benefits and drawbacks

Enjoyed reading all the posts on this topic by obviously some very learned people. I've had my 1967 S&S 37 for almost 30 years and it is just plain a great sailing boat. Have been off shore between...

Re: What would you do? Caught off guard by storm on the Chesapeake

Gee we were out sailing around Thomas Pt Saturday Dec 28th...it was a great day. Have experienced the same a number of times. The only thing I would add is to get away from the Ship's Channel, and...

Re: Wrapping a Steering Wheel

After several failures of the thin leather covers you can buy and apply, a friend and I each had an old leather coat we no longer used. I cut inch wide strips and glued them together end to end with...

Re: Cape Cod Canal vs sailing around

This is all true; however, one of my favorite trips when we were in Marblehead was a circumnavigation around Cape Cod coming down thru the canal and out to Nantucket for a jumping off point. We...

Re: Ted Hood is no more... :(

We just happen to be passing through Marblehead on our way from Virginia to Maine where we use to live and heard of his passing. Always admired the Little Harbor 38 he designed and which he sailed...

Re: Mooring pendants for storms

We have been on a mooring at Hartge's until last year. I had two pennants on the mooring, a three strand braided line as the primary, and a chain penant (slightly longer) as the backup. I know this...

Re: Race to St Michaels

We did the Elf Classic Race to St Michaels last week end and took a 3rd with our 1967 Apache 37 sloop. It's characterized by a LeMans start. It was a beat most of the way. Great fun. All old...

Re: Fastest route from Annapolis to NYC?

Head north thru the C&D canal, south to Cape May (you'll have to around the bottom because your mast is too tall to go in the back way (where the ferries enter)), then straight to NY Harbor up the...

Re: Send packing the stuffing gland..

The traditional stuffing box is just not such a big deal. After 20 years, we replaced the stuffing material while the boat was in the water....worked fine and the new packing material is working...

Re: Chesapeake Bay, Western Shore Marinas

Hartge Yacht Harbor...been there 4-5 years. Boatyard, nice people, deep draft for slip or moorings. Nice people. Not fancy, but very functional. Great grounds, lounge chairs on grass overlooking...

Re: What happens when you fly the spinnaker in heavy air?

We saw the finish of the 2008 Figaro in Brittany and participated in their parade. What a thrill.

Re: If you don't sail...you're a freakin' moron.

I agree. Here in the Chesapeake Bay, prime sailing season is just beginning. When it says "small craft warnings", we go out. We have hank on head sails and with the #3 and a double reef in the...

Re: Give me a break: Techniques for Heaving-To

On one occasion when the dingy we were towing flipped over in boisterous conditions, we immediately hove to. This gave us a stable platform to fix the situation. A great technique everyone should...

Re: Maine to Chesapeake Fall Passage

Have done the round trip many times. It's really fun. If you have a good crew, you can decide to go non-stop if in a hurry, or stop overnight along the way...probably would not go thru hell's gate...
