Ipad/ Bad Elf and Which App?

Good point DR. However buying the bad elf to add functionality is throwing good money after bad IMHO.

That's why I suggested the investment in the iPAD mini. Yes it's more expensive but is a much...

Get iPAD mini with the WiFi and Cellular option. GPS built in then add the Garmin Blue Chart App. Well worth the investment

Re: how to adjust jib leads on toe rail

i could use the tracks with a smaller jib. However, I sail with a 135 and using the tracks the jib would interfere with the shrouds and I cant trim the headsail properly.

Re: how to adjust jib leads on toe rail

The above drawing doesnt work. I have tracks installed there and they are too "inside" for the size jib I fly (135). I have had to remove the jib sheet from the track and attach to a snap block on...

how to adjust jib leads on toe rail

I have been heading upwind and adjusting. Was hoping there was some magical piece of hardware. A barber hauler may be an option.

how to adjust jib leads on toe rail

I sail a Mariner 28 and I have to put the jib leads on the toe rail in order to get the desired sail shape.

I use snatch blocks on the toe rail. This is a pain to adjust. I was in strong winds...

Give way when hoisting the main?

Courtesy and common sense seem to be the best rules to follow. I have sailed in Maine most of my life, only in the Chesapeake the last couple of years.

Seem to be lots of Asshats in the...

Give way when hoisting the main?

In my situation as described above. I believe the other captain was technically correct. At some point however common sense and courtesy have to apply.

Having asked him twice to bear away clearly...

Give way when hoisting the main?

So the purpose of this thread.

I was raising my main under power. 3/4 of the way up my halyard got tangled in the lazy jack. I could not lower nor raise my main.

While struggling with the main...

Give way when hoisting the main?

When I see a sailing vessel raising their main, as a courtesy, I give way so I don't interfere with the other vessel.

Even though both vessels are under power, technically if the other vessel is...

Re: Know the rules!

Good point. But in both cases I didn't have time for the horn blasts as I was doing what was expected of me and very close. There is the "Last clear chance" rule so I altered course as I was the...

Know the rules!

Got cut off twice this past weekend by "sailors" not knowing the rules of right of way.

The first instance: I am close hauled on a starboard tack being approached by a 40+ Hinckley on a port tack....

Re: J/97

I have a friend who has a Cape Dory 28 with a full keel. The top is hollow as you say and the bilge is deeper. The J/97 had a very shallow bilge and the hollow keel was not used for a sump. The...

Thanks for the warning! I'll have to keep her away from the J/97 for a while. I do not assume older construction is better I am simply more familiar with the older techniques. Thank you for...

Re: J/97

I should have been clearer in my original post. I don't want this discussion to turn into an older vs newer construction debate. I like the J/97 a lot and did not intend to be critical of the...

J/97

I just took a look at the new J/97. My wife has gotten into racing and wants a faster boat. I won't replace the Mariner 28 (1979) I have now, I own it and have poured too much of myself into...

Re: Flaking the Main Sail

I have Lazy Jacks installed and that made flaking easier. The more you flake a new sail the easier it gets. Although you should be careful not to always flake in the same place as creases may form...
