Removing ballast from inside the ship and putting...

Removing ballast from inside the ship and putting it outside would actually raise the gross tonnage, not lower it. There are things you can play with to reduce your tonnage and it's possible they did...

Re: HMS Bounty in trouble...

Gross Tonnage is a confusing thing. It's actually related to internal volume, nothing to do with actual weight. Changing the ballast wouldn't have an affect on tonnage, net or gross. Net is the...

Re: HMS Bounty in trouble...

My father, a marine diesel mechanic (who is much more qualified to be the engineer on that ship than the actual "engineer" was) suspects it was the first real weather they'd been in in a long time....

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

The lighthouse one popped up on Tineye. But I could still only get as close as Sao Paulo. I have no idea what the full name of the place was.

But yeah, most won't, because they're all original...

Re: Contest/Game - Identify this picture

Tineye is cheating I assume? I know it, but I have no pictures of my own to post, so I won't answer.

Since I have some experience here I'll throw my two cents in. I was on a boat struck by lightning. Cruiser, connected to shore power, well grounded boat. Standing in companionway watching storm....

Bought a Laser. Got a pretty decent deal. Great condition '87, repaired deck, crisp sail, Seitech dolly, good blades, all the upgrades, all the carbon. $1700.

Gonna buy a new Right-On trailer that...

That's getting a little big. I'd like to keep the boat price under $5k for a decent one, and I'd like to keep my slip fees down, so I'd really like something in the 20-25 foot range ideally.

Sleep...

Merit 25 sounds great. PHRF of 171, that's a damn quick boat for 25 feet.

Same PHRF as a J24 basically, but supposedly more sturdy and long lasting, not to mention much cheaper. I'll have to look...

This is a great idea. Thanks. There actually is one. $225/year, or $110/year if you do 3 years at a time.

They've got Sunfish, Flying Scots, and 420s. They won't let adults sail the 420, not sure...
