Re: "Picture of the week" thread

What if the horizon is intentionally crooked as part of your artistic expression? :wink

Re: Hand bearing compasses

Another vote for the Plastimo Iris 50. It rocks.

Re: Yamaha 15hp vs. 20hp

Ah, that makes sense about the 2-stroke.

I don't get the price difference either. I guess it's just pure market economics. Like you said, the highest HP for a given weight is the most desirable,...

Re: What is this canister on the front of my boat?

From the thread description, I was really hoping for depth charges.

Re: Share some Sailing Terms...

Some of my friends (non sailors) go beyond the traditional "3" and say that they are an arbitrary, hyperbolic number of sheets to the wind. Like "17 sheets to the wind" or "a thousand sheets to the...

Re: Yamaha 15hp vs. 20hp

You sure it wasn't an 8? The Merc 4, 5, and 6 are all the same weight (except for the slight difference that come with different shaft lengths.)

Mercuries, Nissans, and recent Evenrudes in that...

Re: Jon Eisberg's Passing today...

I suck at eloquence in times like these, but add me to the long list of sailors who will really miss his advice, his wisdom, and his presence on the boards.

Re: New purchase

I think there are bunch of MacGregor/Ventures that might work. The 21, 22, and 222 are all similar to the Catalina 22 but lighter.

Re: Have You Seen A Mainsheet System Set-up This Way?

My Catalina 27 has boom end sheeting and a traveler that runs along the forward edge of the lazarette. I don't find it in the way at all there (except for maybe the sheet gets in my way a little...

Re: Adding a Topping Lift

Yes, a boom kicker or rigid vang would prevent those problems...I was responding to the solution of just using the main halyard, which is all you mentioned in your previous post.

I can tell you...

Re: Adding a Topping Lift

I would find that method incredibly annoying. The advantages of having a proper topping lift have mostly been noted in this thread already: you don't drop the boom and sail on your guests when you...

Re: Wordpress.org and Yahoo spam

It comes and goes for me. Right now is an extremely active time for some reason.

I have a custom CAPTCHA and it still doesn't stop all of the garbage. Mostly all you can do is hope that Akismet or...

Re: Anything-Sailing Forum Down?

Yeah, but at least it's a Portuguese guy getting into a protracted argument about the Portuguese joie de vivre, which was the cornerstone of anything-sailing. Ah, memories.

Re: Your Onboard Coffee Fix

I really wanted to like the Aeropress, and it has a lot going for it, but for me it makes a weird amount of coffee at a weird strength. I still find myself using my stainless steel french press more:...

Re: 5 or 6 hp engine

I don't think Yamahas are made by Tohatsu, unless something changed recently. There are definitely more than 2 options:

Yamaha
Honda
Tohatsu (who also makes Nissan, Mercury, and more recently...

Re: Small boat takes more caution.

Sounds like a quality adventure. Glad you made it.

I'm not sure who says that little boats are more forgiving. Smaller boats have a lot going for them, but in my experience they're notably less...

Re: Catalina 18mkII 20' what size motor and MPG?

I don't think that's the case for Tohatsus. I cobbled this together from the brochure here (http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/brochure_pdfs/2015_brochure/Tohatsu2015Brochure.pdf):

Re: Catalina 18mkII 20' what size motor and MPG?

Personally, I think the goal with sailboats is to use the smallest engine that you can get away with. Weight is not great for sailing performance, and weight on the transom is particularly bad. Most...

Understanding Wave Reports

Almost all of my sailing has been on well-protected inland water, and waves haven't been a major concern. As we start to venture out into the ocean though, I try to pay attention to this stuff. I'm...

Re: Bilge Pump

I don't think you're going to find it in one unit. The float switches are separate.

I had the same setup as you--with the kind that just turns on every few minutes to see if there's water--and was...

Re: Learning the right way: advice needed!

I learned how to sail on a Catalina 22 with the same sort of ideas in mind. Cheap to buy. Cheap to own. Small enough to slap your hand when you mess up and give you the sort of education that you're...
