Re: 12v Fans......?

In my local Fry's electronics they had a nice selecton of 12v computer fans that were composite and cheap! like $12. My next fan is gonna be something easily replaceable and a home-made mount.

Re: Please tell me this is a nutty idea so I will stop looking at this boat.

Do you know how to repair a head gasket yourself? If you can do the work it;s not a strecth, if you are counting on paying to have the work done I'd say run away.

Re: Nerd needs some nerd help with DIY ipad media/automation system.

OK, I'm still in the thinking about it phase, any reason to choose Relays over N-Channel mosfet's to control things like lighting? I can't really think of too many things I want to control with this...

Re: Howto drill center of a rail.

This seems like the idea I was looking for. If I add a vertical piece on the end, I can square it to the stanchion.

Re: Howto drill center of a rail.

Thanks for the tips guys. There are several Stanchions that are n shaped and welded to the hull I want to add indirect lighting to shine down on the deck, Each stanchion has 2 - 1" horizontal...

Howto drill center of a rail.

I'm installing some lights on the bottom of a 1" SS rail. I need to drill a few holes in a 1" SS rail. Is there a 'trick' to reliably find the center so each light isn't a few degrees off?

Re: First they took the TBT....now they want the paint!

Yeah, though it does affect me personally, at some point, someone has to stop dumping poison into the environment.

Everybody bitches that you can't buy a 2 stroke or a charcoal BBQ in Los Angeles,...

Re: Nerd needs some nerd help with DIY ipad media/automation system.

Whoa! FIFTY TWO dollars!? What am I made of $$?

just kidding, I really like that, thank you.

That actually looks like a perfect amp, much better than what I've been finding in my own search....

Re: Choosing/spec'ing VHF radio?

Are you cruising relatively close? human head to human head the the range of a handheld is about 7 miles before the curvature of the earth gets in the way. Here in the puget sound we're never more...

Re: Nerd needs some nerd help with DIY ipad media/automation system.

Thanks for the tips so far. I just ordered a buttload of arduino stuff from DX. I am actually thinking rasberri PI for the brain but arduino seemed simpler to begin with. I'm still torn between...

Nerd needs some nerd help with DIY ipad media/automation system.

I'm refitting my boat from the ground up, I'm a bit of a nerd, and I'm flat broke.

So, what I want is a totally trick high-end system and spend little if no money.
I'd like to tie everything...

Re: Choosing/spec'ing VHF radio?

OK, need a little more info about your boat. Do you have a plotter? Are you comfortable wiring things together at the level of soldering wires together?

Personally, I'd avoid radios with AIS,...

Re: Help choosing a new MFD and Radar needed

I am a very 'techy' guy, (nerd) and Raymarine's user interface is really abysmal. and drives me mental. just one example, I've never had any other device that has a 'home' button on the screen and a...

Re: Raymarine Wireless Tacktick opinions from owners?

Wow, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but IMO that was a HORRIBLE decision.

The Simrad could have driven the X5 every bit as well as the Raymarine, and done EVERYTHING else much better.

And...

Re: Help choosing a new MFD and Radar needed

They all will. if you are looking to control an autopilot from the MFD only Simrad/B&G will do that.

Re: Help choosing a new MFD and Radar needed

Well, if you get a simrad MFD you can do without the Autopilot control head altogether and save some $$. Or have both and have a little redundancy in case one died. So there is actually an...

Re: best way to mount Aluminium to steel underwater

The ones I'm contemplating are blue, LED, and just fo augment other lights I'm putting on deck to make it kinda pretty at night. Or stupid/tacky depending on how you look at it I guess.

Re: best way to mount Aluminium to steel underwater

I may rethink this and find an all plastic version instead. Seems safer.

But same question: If I drill & tap the hull, what's the best way to seal the thread and prevent galling? Something like...

Re: best way to mount Aluminium to steel underwater

Thanks, That is a concern indeed.

As for the actual hole for the wire, it can be pretty small, less 1/8" or so.

What would be the best way to seal it? Inject epoxy? Or am I over-thinking...

Re: best way to mount Aluminium to steel underwater

At this point I'm unsure whether I will put them on the sides or just at the transom.

But my boat is a 40,000 pund monster with a 20" wide keel and a whole bunch of welded plate that was never...

Re: best way to mount Aluminium to steel underwater

I have one in my hand and it is most certainly milled billet aluminium.
However, it's also not "in" the hull, it's surface mounted. So I'm really only concerned about standing it off of the hull,...

Re: best way to mount Aluminium to steel underwater

Thanks, I think I'm gonna 'just do it' like you said and not worry too much about it.

As for electrolysis, I'll just isolate it with some nylon spacers. But worse case it would be the $100...
