Re: "Most common" boat - Lake Ontario

You can take it thru the Trent-Severn yourself, just take the stick down ... my slip neighbours used to take their Bayfield 25 the other way from Barrie out to Georgian Bay every year.

OMG,...

Re: "Most common" boat - Lake Ontario

Before I saw you say you're thinking of at least 30', I would have said, "Weekend cruiser, stand-up headroom, head, comfortable, reasonably nimble? One answer - Grampian 26!"

That's still the...

Re: What to take, toss, sell or store

Mike,

We had a somewhat similar experience to you - we just did a transatlantic move, and everything had to fit in a 20' container. It's amazing how much will fit in there :-) it seems to me if...

Re: Boat brands to stick with for ocean rough seas?

Re: Liveaboard woman alone

Yeah, but if his residence is his Cal 2-27, it may have been less than a year of his GF's rent.

We're not talking about the marina costs after you invest in a HR-53...

Re: Advice For Good Boat To Learn On

If neither boat is too far from you, go and take lots of pictures of everything then come back here and get the peanut gallery to suggest areas for further investigation. The key items/issues/gotchas...

Re: Ways to Get Boat From Long Island to Upstate NY

This.

Scads of 22-23 ft boats were produced in the Lake Ontario area back in the day. Be patient, you'll find a good one with a good trailer for a fair price, and tow it happily home at 55 mph to...

Re: Advice For Good Boat To Learn On

The O'Day without a motor isn't going to sell quick, so you may be able to knock a nice chunk off the asking price. If the boat's dry, the trailer's bearings/tires are good, and the tears in the main...

Re: Advice For Good Boat To Learn On

Tippy, or more technically, easily heeled. The opposite of "stiff".

Not what you want in a boat to learn on...

Re: How do you feel about catamarans?

Sailed a small (23') French cat the other day, for the first time. I understand the attraction: it was fast, pointed at least reasonably well (35 or better AWA, no instruments so I couldn't tell...

Re: Boat Purchase Timing ??

You got it right here - as a long-time Toronto resident, boats come out in Sept/Oct, and sellers want the boat gone so they don't have to prep for the winter. Prices go back up in the spring.

But...

Re: Getting into sailing

If you want to build a boat, build a boat.

If you want to sail, buy a boat. Much cheaper than building one.

(Some people do both - my previous boat (my avatar pic) was built from a surplus...

Re: Need help buying a good used sailboat/live-aboard

There are a lot of good boats out there, and it's a buyer's market. But you have to figure out what you want - full keel/fin keel, aft/center cockpit, traditional or modern, lots of teak or none.
