Re: Brightwork finish - what WAS this?

Thanks all. I've done a fair bit of research on Thistles in general before even getting this one. In the cleaning process I've discovered some more issues in the fiberglass. Although the hull is...

Re: Brightwork finish - what WAS this?

The pic of the rail is definitely fiberglass cloth that was applied and finished over, which is what led me to consider something other than varnish. Not sure I see the need to go back with the...

I was just given a Clark Thistle in neglected but recoverable shape (new sails, good rigging, good trailer.) The most glaring problem is brightwork in rough shape. The old finish is coming off in...

Re: May be getting a free Thistle

Thistle 2496, the Old Dog, joined our little fleet yesterday. It's a '62 Clark model, so one of the fairly early fiberglass boats.

The good: The hull is stiff and sound. Most of the hardware...

My tow vehicle is a 97 Explorer with 212,000 miles. Most reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Rated to tow 6700lbs.

Of course, it's the V8....

Good luck and enjoy!

Re: May be getting a free Thistle

Well, it looks like this is moving forward. I'm supposed to meet the owner at his house in two weeks. He says it's mine for the taking.

Getting excited about this. After some ongoing discussion...

Looks to be just a few blocks north of Navy pier in Chicago proper on lake Michigan. No idea what marina it is. I didn't think there would be more than one that was visible from the area.

sailnetters in Chicago?

I'm in Chitown for business and from my room on the magnificent mile I can see sailboats on the edge of the lake. Any sail net folks moored or docked there? Just curious.

Re: Splash 2015

All this talk of ice and snow amazes me. It will be 90 deg F here on Sunday. I feel for you guys.

OTOH, our sailing season will be over in another month and a half as the summer doldrums take...

Re: May be getting a free Thistle

You know Mark, I looked at that when he first contacted me about the Thistle, and I compared it to my current boat. The Thistle has slightly less than double the displacement and slightly less than...

Re: Gremlins in the chain locker

I fully endorse these new euphemisms and will be incorporating them in conversation whenever possible.

May be getting a free Thistle

..which could be like getting a free splinter or a low cost poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

An older friend has decided that he doesn't have the spare time to sail, and since his wife never...

Re: Noobie--Just purchased my first boat: Holder 14

I bought a Vagabond 14 last summer to learn on - also my first boat. You'll enjoy it a lot, they're fun. I'm inland so I don't get to play on the salt, but I've found the boat to be very stable. ...

Re: Ga sailing School

Thanks for the invite George. I'd love to stop by and see the boats if I'm ever in the area. My plan is to move up to something I can weekend on the lake or coast in a couple years, and both those...

Re: Ga sailing School

Good to hear your evaluation. I've been thinking about doing the 101 classes with them. I'm in the Macon area, and this seems like the closest, best option for a school.

Re: Lights for boat without a battery?

Just FYI, if you want to run a battery on the Holder, it's not that hard to mount in the forward cubby. You can run wires aft to a trolling motor for backup propulsion and could wire in lights if...

Re: 14 foot sailboat on a 17 foot trailer okay?

Hey, I have a Vagabond 14. Same boat, and same as the Hobie 1-14. There's a good group of owners on Yahoo groups and a facebook group that's mostly the same people.

My boat has a tiny Dilly...

Re: Flying drones

Drone solution:

1/2 oz oval fishing sinkers (lead, steel, or brass)
3' to 6' pieces of 100lb test fishing line tied to the weights
Good wrist brace slingshot.

They don't fly so well with a...

Re: Stinky Foul Weather Gear

A lot of dive shops in FL that rent wetsuits swear by our disinfectant / deodorizer OdoBan Eucalyptus scent. They dilute it at about 1 oz/gallon and soak the wetsuits in it after each rental, then...
