Re: Bowsprit sizing question

In a couple days I'll post pic's of the one I built for my boat. I tested it last year and it worked fine but borderline without the bobstay. I'm adding a bobstay for the much larger asym I recently...

Re: How to put epoxy for screw mounting into a void???

Archer,

Go back to the foam suggestion. I wouldn't worry about water absorption, if water gets in the holes aren't sealed properly (see butyl tape). Now, where you can get to the underside, bolt...

Re: Running Diesel on the Hard

It's perfectly ok to run the engine on the hard, I do twice year. Vibration shouldn't be an issues as long as your stands are chained together.

They are chained right?

Re: water water everywhere!

I'm with you D except I don't know where the water is coming in.
I'll be pulling the headliner down this year. Every rain I get plenty of water. always thought it is coming down the mast but...

Re: Thoughts on Petit Vivid (non-copper) bottom paint?

I've been using vivid for 8+ years. First on my J28 now on my Express 35. I love everything about it but the price. I club race with some weekend racing just for the fun of if, and win my share of...

Re: what to check for before boat delivery?

Check the water level in the batteries. I delivered my boat from Boston to Narragansett bay and haft way home the alternator cooked. After a pretty thorough troubleshooting process I couldn't find...

Smile Re: This winter...

Yes, winter hasn't even begun yet. December 21 is the first day of winter and the only good thing about that is it's also the darkest day (winter solstice) of the year. I celebrate the fact that it...

Re: Why are wheels so big?

Ok, so I'm coming late to the party but I'll still give my 2 cents. Regarding wheel size vs autopilot. These are only loosely related.
Steering effort all comes down to torque at the rudder stock...

Re: Boat name/graphic: Where and how big?

for my first boat 28', I had 4" letters for the name and 3" letters for the POC on the stern and it looked fine. For the second boat, 35', 3" POC on the stern and 4.5" name on the side(s). The name...

Re: Do you use dinghy lights?

Interesting and timely topic. For the first time my dingy is properly registered. I did this because I plan on using it a lot more for back an forth from anchor to shore on BI and Newport. I just...

Re: Most efficient 180 degree turn

I have fin keel boat and I can just about pivot/rotate the boat on the keel. Using a combination of reverse full left rudder and forward full right rudder it's easy but takes practice at first....

Re: Why do you race

I race in beer can series and a few weekend races. I enjoy the competitive nature both in in sailing against other boats and against myself. Chances are if one doesn't have some competitive sprit...

Re: bilge pumps in series, ok?

CapRon,

I'm quite surprised the rule would pump thru the jabisco and the check valve downstream of it. As mentioned the regular centrifugal bilge pumps do not generate a lot of pressure. When you...

Re: Butyl Tape for mast base?

I'm not sure why you need/want to seal the SS mast plate but whatever. You really only need to seal any thru hull/deck penetration ie the bolts. I've found the butyl method to be the best and...

Re: Electrical 101

Seeing how this is an electrical 101 thread I’ll add to it.

I bought a “new to me” boat in October 2013. During the two day transit from Boston to Narragansett Bay two things happened. At one...

Re: What are the pros/cons of the Max Prop

Bob,
I have a feathering maxprop. I had a flexofold folder which replaced my martec folder on my old boat. Shaft angle and orientation has no effect on the flexofold as both blades fold as one. On...

Re: Traveler span

Bar, Most of the load on the traveler is up so something as simple as a rod going down to the cockpit floor ( with a backing plate of course) is all you need. The rod would be in tension when in use....

Re: What are the pros/cons of the Max Prop

Med, My "new to me" boat came with the maxprop. If I ever have to change it I will likely go back to the flexofold.

For the record the flexofold does open 100% in reverse and one can hear the thud...

Re: What are the pros/cons of the Max Prop

Med, I've had three different props on my boat(s). My J28 came with a martec folder that after 7 years I could not stand any longer. I replaced that with a flexofold two blade folder. Hugh upgrade....

Re: Words of Wisdom; Words of Warning

Mine was not reviewing the chart because you think you know the water. Easy way to find the bottom or in my case "the rock"

Re: "The 2 happiest days of a boatowners life are..."

I tend to think of the days as "sad days" and "happy days". Up here in the northeast a sad day is the day in November we pull them out of the water. For the rest of the fall, winter and early spring...

Hopefully next week will...

Re: Prop shaft strut repair

Installed funny as in it was canted about 4 degrees such that it looked like it was bent coming out of the hull. I'll get the pics posted and you can see it.
BTW, I didn't start this project...

Re: Prop shaft strut repair

Well, I failed in my attempt to post the before pic's but I will try again. I'm well into the "during" phase of this project and it's not as bad as I expected. The strut isn't bent it and it didn't...

Re: Mainsheet system

I'm going to end up with some variant of a 6:1 coarse with a fine adjustment. I post pics when I finish the design.
