Halyards turning black

The segments of my main and jib halyard that "live" inside of my mast when the sails are down are becoming darkly discolored. I've had the boat 2 years and have only noticed it with in the last few...

Re: Recommendations for inflatable kayak as tender

In an Advanced Elements inflatable kayak, can one stand up whilst next to the sailboat and climb in relatively easily? I don't have a swim deck or swim ladder.

Re: Moving from fresh to salt water moorage - questions

Yeah, I can pull it out of the well. I'm trying to think if I can then clamp it on the transom or one of the sidewalls of the well so that the prop is up out of the salt water.

Still fixating on...

Re: Moving from fresh to salt water moorage - questions

Alex-

Unfortunately my motor doesn't pivot out of the water, its stuck in a well near the transom.

Do I need zincs? Even if I pull the motor out every time I still have a through-hull... does...

Moving from fresh to salt water moorage - questions

I enjoy sailing in Puget Sound much more than Lake Washington, but it takes nearly three hours to motor through the shipping canal and locks. Thinking about mooring my boat at Shilshole.

If I...

Re: Battery question

Yes, it holds a charge for a long time. I've had the battery for two years now. Not sure how old it is. Vigor is the manufacturer.
Used to have shore power until the marina removed it. Now the only...

Battery question

Been reading a Sailboat Electronics Made Simple book.

Opened up the top of my old battery to see if I needed to add distilled water. To my surprise, the water level is nearly up to the caps (maybe...

Headsail rigging question

We are blessed by the quality, sturdiness and affordability of 40 year old small fiberglass sailboats. I got mine on Craigslist for next to nothing, put some work into it, got the rigging replaced...

Recommendations for inflatable kayak as tender

Hi

I've got a small racer cruiser. A rigid or inflatable dinghy seems a bit too big and unruly.

Any recommendations for an inflatable two-person kayak for use as a tender?

Angle between course over ground tacks?

I know that the tacking angle is the angle between headings of two tacks when beating.

What is the term for the angle between two courses over ground after a tack? (ie greater than tacking angle...

How does keel create lift?

I have read that the keel is a foil that creates lift. But I am confused.

So it does more than resist leeway (which seems like drag against leeway)?

What causes the lift? Water flow? Keels...

Re: Jib halyard shackle too small for jib's head

Thanks everyone. It sounds like a soft shackle would be good. I would plan to use it to attach the hard shackle on my halyard to the head of my jib... right? Like a link in a chain.

Tiller hardware sealing/calking

Going to install a tiller tamer.

After drilling holes for screws, how would you protect the tiller from rot?

Silicone grease?
Epoxy into the holes? (That's what I did for the autopilot pin)...

Re: Jib halyard shackle too small for jib's head

So I would just leave the soft shackle on the jib, and attach the halyard shackle to it?

Re: Jib halyard shackle too small for jib's head

Don't think I can tie a bowline because the shackle is spliced on the end of my halyard and the shackle won't fit thru the grommet....

Good advice about carbiners spontaneously attaching to stays...
