Re: Sea survival capsule - next step in safety gear?

At sea a tsunami is just a non breaking wave that passes under the boat almost unnoticed. These are for land dwellers.
But a very real risk of getting trapped in it with only one outward opening...

Re: Feasibility of shared "ownership?"

As it's often said; "The very worst ship is a partnership" and with a pleasure boat it's certainly the rule.

In my experience it never works very well, and nearly always one buys the other out....

Re: Learn to sail by racing, a good idea?

The real racers are a different paradigm these days. They are more like a dinghy than a displacement cruisier.

IMO Club racing in cruising boats can be good to learn how to handle a cruising boat....

I was looking for sailing songs, unfortunately clicking the link gets:

Re: Are self-tacking headsails really a new invention

It could be dangerous too. A boom that sweeps the entire foredeck sends shivers down my spine.

I think the only place a self tacking jib with a boom should be used is on an inner staysail on a...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Anyone here that knows about welding and fabrication will really like Brent's construction and welding........

The design, fabrication and final assembly of Brent's builds are quite shocking. ...

Re: What type of Keel do you prefer....

I agree; it really depends.

A low aspect keel operates similarly to an aircraft delta wing and provides lift through spanwise vorticity . They can produce a large amount of lift at very low...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Roll gyradius and Metacentric height (GM) are the chief components in the natural roll period. That affects the jerky roll response to waves too. Increasing roll gyradius decreases roll motion a lot....

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

But Jeff, a desired Displacement Length ratio is part of the design brief at the start. Then D is fixed and the designer doesn't actually want to reduce it. That target more than any other will drive...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Paulo

By modern design I take it you you mean the trend many production boats follow.

Light for a production boat means less materials and lower scantling requirements throughout so it's a...

Re: Steel boat care

A long nosed Die grinder is a useful tool for steel boat maintenance, use an electric power tool off an inverter , there are apparently battery versions now. Rust often forms a few deeper pits with...

Re: Steel boat care

The steel version was a poor design IMO.
I had a client recently with a steel Departure that was far too tender to stand up well to her sail and slow speed maneuvering was abysmal.

The client...

Re: Crossing the Pacific in a Liveaboard?

Get some experience first, certainly before buying a cruising boat.

Maybe go and Join a yacht club, and ask about casual crewing in races as a newbie in the cruising divisions.

Pass the word...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

This is just another myopic opinion of yours Brent. If you can't take my word for it then contact a test facility, ask them directly it would be a refreshing approach for you rather than simply...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

All the research test tanks use a carriage that the models affixed to, not a towline.
There's several ways of restraining a model for testing with a complex linkage it's possible to fully fix or...

Come on Brent, you don't understand your own structures, and now you want to pass expert judgement on Finot's !

Because you didn't understand what the framing was there for doesn't mean it was...

Bob, yes it's a great book. I have the two second editions, there was a second, "second edition" with around 70 pages added on IOR measurement. Otherwise they are the same.

Yes the 100% is a...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

A decade or two ago I looked in some detail at twin keels.

I have a lot of data somewhere involving the development of "Bluebird of Thorne". The design of a twin keel boat has many more variables...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Still having a bit of trouble with this Brent?

A body lines plan with scale would illustrate the curvature correctly. Then you could post some facts by putting numbers to it, that's all that...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Actually an inverted pressure vessel end is parabolic not spherical, the material takes the load in compression. It's quite a different structure and not applicable to an argument for the omission...

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

Brent likes to say 200 boats have been built but that's hulls only. The reality, as others have pointed out before, is that only a part of the BS origami hulls pulled together are actually completed....

Re: Steel vs Fiberglass

I'd predict what is called snap-through buckling. It would have resulted in something looking a bit like hollow half hull with the stronger parts of the interior "embossed" on the pushed in shell.
